just starting this process. Went to see my pcp last month and explained how I need this surgery. She gave me a referral which was just faxed to the surgeon today. The person I spoke to on the phone said it could take up to 2-3 weeks for a packet to come in the mail-I gues to get this party started. She mentioned a letter of necessity, I didnt ask too many ?s she didn't really seem informative. So my ?s is what is a letter of necessity, I thought that was a referral? I have a feeling this will be a long and bumpy ride.

My letter of necessity was from my referring physician, she/he has to write a letter stating why the surgery is necessary.  My letter of necessity was actually my referral letter.

Hiiiiiii....I was wonderin if you were ever gonna post the copy of your referral letter/letter of necessity.  I have been typin up all of my monthly visits and I was going to type this one up too.  I was wondering if I could pleaaaaase get a copy of something so I could re-write it to fit my situation.  I just kind of need an outline...something to GO by if you will.  You can message it to me if you would like! Thanks so much!

I did a search here on OH for "letter of medical necessity" and copied the one posted here word-for-word.  It gives explainations/supportive research for the benefits of weight loss for certain comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, etc.  I simply printed it off and took it to my doctors office, left it and they called me the next day to say that my PCP had review it and signed it.   What I have found is that if you have a good PCP, and a surgeon's office that knows their insurance companies, the process goes fairly smooth.  If you've got a PCP who won't work with you, I'd certainly try to find someone who will.  A good PCP is worth his/her weight in gold!
