I am worried sick waiting to find out about the insurance process. I have United Healthcare here in NJ and they do cover bariatric surgery but of course it has to go before the Care Coordination department to be evaluated first. I've read some terrible stories about insurance problems on here but so far, not much on UH.  Has anyone dealt with them????

I have coverage with United Healthcare Choice Plus through my husband's employer.   I want the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy.  My dr. sent in the paperwork, but I was denied because they considered it "experimental".  If I wanted the lapband, roux-en-y, or DS, I would have been approved immediately.  I just don't want to have these surgeries.  They're too invasive for me and I don't want something foreign in my body, so lapband is out. I currently have an appeal filed with UHC and I'm waiting for their response. Don't know if this helped any.  I do know of several people on the VSG board who have been approved through UHC and lots of La. residents who have had other weight loss surgeries approved through UHC. Best of luck to you.... Jo

I HAVE UHC AND ARE CURRENTLY IN THE PROCESS.  AT MY CONSULTATION, WHEN MY DR FOUND OUT THAT I HAD UHC I WAS FAST TRACKED. IF YOU CHECK THE MAIN BOARD FORUM, YOU WILL FIND MANY MANY POSITIVE COMMENTS ABOUT UHC, VERY QUICK TO APPROVE SURGERY. GOOD LUCK!!

I used to work with UnitedHealthcare, so I can tell you that if you meet the requirements that have been listed in your explanation of coverage, then you generally will not have any issues.  Also, if your provider gives all the medical information that he should, adjudication of the service should happen rather quickly. The only thing that I do not like about UnitedHealthcare is that there are not too many requirements on educating the patient about the surgery before it renders it.  I have seen some people submit for approval, have the surgery approved within two business days, be scheduled for surgery one week later, have the surgery, and move on with their lives.  Moving that quickly to get someone the surgery is plainly detrimental to the patient's long-term success in my view. I hope all goes well with you while working with UnitedHealthcare.
