Employer says i'm not fat enough!
Aetna denied me at first, them my appeal had to go to my employer who has denied me for not having a BMI over 40 long enough even though i've had the same co-morbs. AND they said that my surgeons summary letter regarding my 3 month supervised diet was not sufficient enough and was supposed to have been 6 months - even though according to Aetna's clinical policy buletin it only had to be 3 months. Geez, what more do these people want? Anybody else been through this? Any suggestions? I've filled out the contact form for Gary Viscio ..
If you did the pre-surgical prep program (3 months) with your surgeon's office and you had a BMI of at least 35 for the past 5 years with at least one serious co-morbid condition you should be able to get the denial overturned with either a peer to peer (done with your surgeon's office and the medical director that reviewed your case at Aetna) or you can appeal it yourself. Option #1 is better because it takes less time-and if you meet the above stated criteria and you provided that info, it was an oversight on their part and should be easily corrected. Aetna's criteria is pretty black and white so it's hard for them to deny when you can easily disprove their reasoning.
