TriCare aka TriWest

Hi Everyone,

I’m new to the board having lurked here for the last week.  I’ve been thinking about Lap Band surgery and am totally inspired by all of your experiences.  I attended a free seminar last night and learned that this clinic (and others) has not been successful getting TriCare patients approved for four years!  Does anyone online have TriCare or TriWest as they call it in the Pacific Northwest ?  I live in Everett, WA and have been referred to the Puget Sound Surgical Clinic (Dr. Billings?).

Thanks for your help,

Deb

Hi Deb, Double check www.mytricare.com it has all the coverages on there but from what I've researched they do not cover lapband at all. They do cover the bypass but from what I can tell not lapband. I was first interested in the lapband myself but after finding out they didn't cover it (I'm tricare north and prime) I started researching the bypass to see if it was something I would want to do. For so long I was afraid of it because I didn't understand it and now that I've done more research on it I really do think it is the best option for me now. I know that some don't agree in their situations but I would encourage some research on it to see if it would work for you and if you think it will then try and go that route.  Good luck! Crissy

Tricare does not cover the lapband.  However, it seems to me that I have read of people getting lapband at some MTF.  There was something on the military message board I think it was last year about people getting it done at Walter Reed.  So if you are near a MTF you might want to check into that.
