Insurance Saga part 1

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share my story so far, of my insurance quest. A few weeks ago I called my insurance to see if I’m covered for weight lost surgery and they said yes, which was exciting but then they also added that I would need to undergo a 12 month supervised diet in order to qualify. It would have been great, but I’m graduating in May 2008 and will be dropped from my insurance once I’m not a full time student. Which would have been 6 months into my supervised diet. So, in the last 2 weeks I’ve been looking for individual coverage  that covers gastric bypass which isn’t a small fortune….which has been a nightmare!  I finally found a insurance through Anthem which isn’t  totally costly but still $$$ and they do cover WLS. Which is exciting, my coverage doesn’t start until October but so far all I need is to be determined Morbid Obese and have a history of 5 years back of morbid obestiy….Keep your fingers cross for me!!

Make sure you read the fine print on that policy. I had a plan with Anthem BC/BS through work, but it had a WLS exclusion. I inquiried about purchasing an individual plan with them and they said self pay plans don't cover WLS . Maybe depends on what state you are in? I'm in NY and my company and plan was out of CT. I did end up finding a self pay plan in NY (GHI) that is covering my Lap Band. Good luck.
