I was just wondering if I self pay will my insurance pay if something should go wrong? I have been denied on all appels. I wanted to get the lap band. I have read on the boards sometimes there are problems with the band slipping or having to be removed. If I was a self pay and this happened to me would I have to pay for that as well. My insurance company is no help at all.

Hi!! I'm a newbie to all of this, but I do remember my surgeon saying at the seminar that self-pay was an option BUT if something goes wrong it could be financially catastophic.  He said it was good if everything went according to plan and you basically knew what your costs would be and had prepared for them.  Based on these statements, it seems likely that insurance would not cover problems that happen later if you self pay.  I hope I'm wrong however.  Maybe someone who has self-paid will chime in.

Normally the answer is no. If insurance does not approve the surgery, they will not pay for any complications. Your insurance company's contract would tell you more though.

I am so glad you asked this! I just came to this site to post specifically about this. I will be getting the lap-band on 8/17/07. I pray that nothing will go wrong, but if it does, how do you cover those costs if surgery is necessary?? Maybe the attorney will see this message and give us a better insight. Ali

Ali,      Where are you having your lap band done. Do you mind me asking how much it will cost you. I am waiting for the hospitial to get back to me with the price. I beluieve they said i would be charged the amount the insurance would have to pay. Thanks E

The total cost is $14,676. That includes all fees (MD, hospital, anesthesia) and 1 year of office visits and band fills after the surgery. I am a patient of Dr. Jawad in Ocala, FL and will be using the outpatient surgery center.
