Hey Everyone, This is my first time on this forum and this may have already been asked but o well. I am 18 and I am under my mom's insurance which is medcost. My Mom works for a doctors office so she got the pre-certification lady to call my insurance to see what the requirements are for gastric bypass. I think I have done everything but the 6 month diet. They have not hear my case yet because I just got it sent it. But I was wondering if you can get around the 6 month diet if your health is bad enough. I am now getting high blood pressure, I have had 1 major knee surgery and 2 small ones and another major on in the future. Plus, I have been on a diet since I was in 5th grade. Just wondering. Believe me, I will do the 6 month if I have to because I am determined to have this surgery! I was just wondering if anyone has gotten around. I don't want to wait 6 more months but I will if I have too. Sorry to pester everyone with all this! I hope everyone has a great day!

I highly doubt they will let you go without it, that is one of the biggest reasons they deny. For me, I needed documented weigh in's with vital signs from my PCP's office every month for 6 months. I worked for my insurance company and they still wouldnt let me go without it. First I did my own weigh in's but they wanted it directly from the PCP so lucky enough my PCP just took my information and sent it in for me..

Hi TBCGurl!

I too have Medcost through Greatwest. I submitted my paperwork in April after 3 mos of doctor supervised weight loss and was denied for the 6mos doc sup weight loss attempt and because I didnt not have 2 years of weight maintenance. I kept going to my PCP and next tuesday will be my 6th visit and I will resubmit on appeal the same day. I say all of this to say there is probably no way around that and the  best thing to do is get started on it while doing everything else. Send me a private message and I will email you the specifics and what I did.

Hi, see the posts above on appeal or wait and the 6 months diet.  It should help a bit.

Hi all insurance companies are different but I have priority health HMO in MIchigan and if your BMI is over 45 you do not need the 6 month medical supervised diet. I am not familiar with your insurance but you still may have hope!! Good luck! Renee
