WLS to cure diabetes

Hi, I am working toward having DS surgery in January 2007.  Unfortunately, my insurance policy has a total exclusion for WLS even if medically necessitated.  I am going to try to argue that the WLS is not for obesity or weight management but rather as a cure for diabetes.  In the last couple of months, there have been articles reporting gastric bypass as a cure for Type 2 diabetes.   I recognize that this appeal has almost zero chance but I was wondering if anyone has tried this tactic when appealing insurance denials. Thanks for the information.  I suspect it is self insurance because it is the state of South Carolina insurance.  Unfortunately, finding another job is not an option so I will continue to pursue the self-pay option. Wendy

Actually, I really like your idea about the perspecitve of weight loss surgery as a cure for diabetes. I know what articles you are talking about...there have been some recent studies about considering weight loss surgery an actual cure for diabetes. It seems like a good tactic. No matter what you decide, good luck!
