I have a BMI of 41 or 42 or 40 and I was ruled disabled in 1992 due to fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigued with some recurring depressive episodes, and I also have osteo-arthritis, and GERD.  The weight gain, of eighty pounds, at that time,  followed an injury in 1988 and seemed to link to the medications for the pain, and then the fibromyalgia soon followed. I wonder if a disability that got me retired--could still not be a strong enough co-morbidity for medicare? I could drop the medicare and use Blue Shield, but I don't know if this is necessary. I am just starting. I have had such fatigue and I believe it could turn around with the surgery. Does anyone have a similar experience with Medicare? thank you. jeannie

In 2006 medicare ruled that they will cover the surgery.  you shouldn't have any problems.

Gary, I found another doctor in my state who told me they do accept medicare, but after faxing them my insurance card yesterday, now she tells me they are awaiting a new determination from Medicare whether they will cover WLS. What gives with that?

I know Gary is expert, but i will butte in and say that there is a lot of literature, and to my shock, only two hospitals in California are qualified by Medicare to do it. jeanne

Yes, I am certain that it is done at this hospital cuz others have had it done there.  It is Dr. Ara Keshishian at Delano Regional or Delano Bariatric or something to do with Delano, California.

Well that would make sense as someone else I know who is on social security is getting certified out of delano and I could not figure out what she was talking about. she was reluctant to go "that far."  I have to see where it is. As she wanted a RYN, or soemthing, w/o follow up, I am not sure why she was worried about it. But they are not on the website for Medicare.  Wonder why? jeannie

So I would just go to the "Medicare" website to get list of hospitals?

I know that the hospital has to be preapproved by medicare for the surgery to take place at. Other than that I haven't heard anything. I sure hope that they are still approving people cause if not I AM SCREWED!
