Hypothyroidism and Ins. approvals??

I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism in Oct. of 2006, after having tested normal every year for the past 3 years. I started the levothryoxin right away and my levels have been steady in the normal range since January. I have not been able to lose any more weight now than when I wasn't on thyroid meds.

Anyone here with hypothyroidism have troubles with insurance approvals because of it? Or is the hypo considered a co-morb because it didn't start until after I bacame morbidly obese??

I can see the insurance people having a hay day with this one...

I've had Hypothyroidism for well over 10 years now.  It is not considered a co-morb.  My insurance company didn't make that an issue when approving me.  However, all insurance companies are different.  I have BC of Ca.

It wasn't an issue with CIGNA, either, but the external appeal doctor did mention it and that having the DS would help me to lose weight even tho' I have hypothyroidism that is now at normal levels with medication.

I have priority health HMO and I have had hypothyroidism for at least 2 years and I did not have any problems getting approved-all companies are different but once your on meds and your levels are normal and your being treated for it I do not think it will affect any decision for surgery I think it is only if your not being treated for it. good luck with your approval!
