Exclusion Clause?
My insurance provider has an exclusion clause on bariatric surgery. I can't remember all of the lingo they used but I basically understood it as it is not covered, period, regardless of medical reasons. I was wondering if anyone else has a similar clause? Does this "really" mean they won't cover it? I was hoping this was just a deterrent and I could still try and then go through the denial/approval process.
My previous employer's health insurance provider clearly excluded weight loss surgery even if it was medically necessary. I consulted Gary Viscio (on here) and had advised that those exclusions were difficult to overcome in Florida. So, I looked for another job and negotiated a high salary for myself so that if I needed to, I could pay for the surgery myself. Lo and behold, my new employer covered surgery, I just had to complete a 6 month medically supervised diet. That was last year this month I got my new job. My surgery was on April 18th this year.
I figured I was SOL with a plan like that. Thanks for the info.
Luckily, or maybe unluckily, I no longer have the same insurance. In fact the insurance I have now is even worse. I was laid off and forced to take on contract work so the insurance I have is really cheap. I am thinking about purchasing my own policy but I'm not really sure how to go about that. I'll peruse the boards and see if anyone else has decided to purchase their own insurance. Perhaps I can learn something.
