Straighten Me Out - Medicaid Patients

I am trying to convince my husband's aunt to have the pre-op testing and consult done for surgery.  She's convinced that with her medical card (I'm assuming Medicaid, as she doesn't work and receives welfare/food stamps but is not considered "disabled" and does not receive SSI for a disability) that she can't go to just any surgeon that performs the procedure, that she has to go to a surgeon that will accept Medicaid.  Is this true? If the hospital accepts Medicaid (which I'm assuming most do) and the Medicaid program will pay for the surgery with her BMI and health conditions, I would think that there is more than one surgeon in KY that will perform the procedure. I know that my surgeon in Ashland, KY will accept Medicaid... do all surgeons? Help me help her!!

Hello there!!! It is true that the surgeon she chooses must accept Medicaid.  Not all surgeons accept it so my suggestion is to call her social worker and discuss the matter with them or if there is a phone number on the medical card, call Medicaid directly and find out if the surgery is covered and who in her area takes it.  Believe it or not, insurance companies can be very helpful especially when you tell them you are not really sure how to go about the situation.

Hope this helps!!
