getting health insurance after WLS--any suggestions?
Hello, everyone.
I was wondering if anyone had encountered a similar problem. Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated.
I had my LAP RNY 3 months ago and was self-paid since I am currently self-employed w/no health insurance. It set me back 12,500, which I could not really afford but, nonetheless, i was worth every penny. I am now 58 lbs lighter and more than hald way to goal.
A few weeks ago I decided to purchase health insurance from Unicare. Even though I have no major health issues and am no longer even considered obese (my BMI is 28 down from 38), I wanted to have basic coverage in case of an emergency.
Anyway, I was extremely surprised that they flat out refused coverage and didn't even offer any alternative insurance policies because i had WLS. Since then I heard that many insurance companies apparently have a similar policy.
I really didn't think i'd have any problems obtaining insurance coverage. In fact, I though I was a pretty "low-risk" candidate: I'm 31 and in good health and was even healthy prior to WLS. In fact, I'm even healthier now that I'm in a healthier weight range. I don't smoke, abuse alcohol and other than having been sucessfully treated w/meds for mild depression pre-WLS, never had any health problems. Even weight has only been an issue during the last few years and prior to that i was always in thin to normal range.
I guess I should have researched this more before WLS and purchased a policy right
before WLS (i would still have had to self pay for my WLS but would have been covered
after WLS at least for emergencies or basic check ups , etc)
