BCBS Tx Healthselect
Hi yall..i am new to the boards... yall are such an inspiration.
I have a question...has anyone had any luck with BCBS Texas--Healthselect..i know different people have different plans..i cant call yet because DH just started his new job and it is not "in effect" yet...anyway it is the Healtselect plan for BCBS..it is the one the State provides for Higher Education workers..state officials, etc.. I know this is a long shot but i just wanted to see if anyone had any idea if they cover..meanwhile i am counting the days until i can call and find out for sure!
BTW..i am 32, have PCOS and depression(which I hate to say because i have a beautiful family and a blessed life!) insulin resistance...i am 5'3" and 264 (I think my BMI is 44..need to check again) so hoping i can get insurance approval so i can do it this year.
Good luck to everyone, God bless you and thanks in advance for any response.
Hello Shabbymum,
If this Healthselect is the same one that the State Employees and Teachers get, then the answer is no. Unless they have changed there exclusion. I worked for the Tx.Dept.of Human Services for 9 years and 8 months up until Sept. 15,2006, and they fought me nail and tooth with all kind of excuses as to why they would not cover "anything regarding Weight Loss". It got so bad my health began to continue to get worse, to the point that I eventually had to retire on a Medical Disability and apply for SSI, and receives Medicaid, and now they won't even cover it. So I'm kinda back where I started with no insurance to cover any WLS.
I sure hope this helps, and hopefully you have a totlly different Healthselect than I had, but in case it is the same, you are in for a bunch of headaches. One way you can tell if it is the same, is to see if the company that writes up the policy called ERS Employees Retirement Systems, if it is then it's the same.....and either way, they suck big time.
Take Care, & Good Luck

Thank you!! I just posted the question about this insurance today. My sister in law works for State- Social Worker here in Houston. My mother in law is a professor at a university here in Texas. They have the same insurance. BCBS-Texas Health Select.
She is crushed because I looked up the policy and it is clear they have an exclusion.
She is now thinking about self-pay because she wants this done. That is sad. My husband works for the County and they have BCBS but they cover WLS if medically necessary. Sad that Federal and COunty would cover but not state.
Thanks again
Angela

You are right, it is truly sad that the State won't cover anything regarding Weight Loss, not even if the doctor deem it medically necessary. I have fought with BCBS for 7 years and I loss to the point that I had to make some serious life changes. But the bad part is that I don't see it getting any better for the State employees. Either way, I wish your sister-in-law the best of luck. Take Care'
