Fatty Liver Problem

Has anyone when they were over weight had a fatty liver?  I was told by doctor today that I have a fatty liver and will have to go to a liver specialist. Will this help me prove to my insurance healthnet that I need surgery? I have other reasons but is this one? Should I try to get a letter from that specialist? Thanks for reading! Kitty

Did your SURGEON say you needed to see a specialist or your Primary Care doc? I'm just wondering. I think 99.9% of overweight people have "fatty livers" and aren't usually told to see a specialist unless they are having issues as a result of the fatty liver. When you lose weight, you usually lose your fatty liver. This is what I have been told by my surgeon, nurse, primary care doctor and ultrasound tech. This is also why they have us diet prior to surgery, so that we can eliminate as much of that internal fat as possible before surgery. I mean, if you need to see a specialist, see one. But you might want to ask your doctor WHY you need to see a specialist for a fatty liver. Take Care! -Karen

Karen, Thanks so much for taking the time to share with me. I am undergoing tests For M.S, from a neuro doc. durring testing my liver count numbers came out high, So I was then sent to take an ultrasound on my liver to make  sure it looked or seemed normal. It did look normal yet my Primary doc a long with my neuro doc want me to see the liver specialist. I havent gone to the specilaist yet so I am waiting on that apt  to be made. I was just wondering if this would be  good evidence to help me to get my insurance to pay for my surgery.  I do have a BMI of 40 at 220lbs at 5'2 but no other health conditions besides my muscleur issues not yet diagnosed with M.S. So I am trying to find a way to get this surgery done. Thanks so much again! Kitty

Your liver enzymes may have been up during blood work. I know mine were up and my doctor sent me to a liver specialist  who in turn, diagnosed me with fatty liver.
