Calling gviscio!! Advice on exclusion
Currently I have BCBS of Kansas, state employee program. Who is notorious in the area for not covering WLS. They are the largest provider in the state.
I have contacted BCBS of KS and they said that it wasn't there decision to exclude coverage, but a decision made by the state. So I did some digging and found that there is a health authority/commission that determines coverage of the state employee healthplans.
Have you ever file a lawsuit against a state or state insurance commissioner for not offering WLS as an option? Out of 4-5 healthplans available not a single one offers this surgery.
I am just now starting to look into the surgery after thinking about it for several years, only to find out about the exclusion. I haven't taken this laying down. I have contacted the governor, my representatives and senators in the state government, and the state insurance commissioner. I have had some positive responses from some, but the state insurance commissioner who chairs the State of Kansas Health Care Commission that writes the coverage will not return my calls. The most I get out of any of them are that they have forwarded my request on to "people of power".
Is there anything else you think I can do to get this coverage on at least one health care plan offered?
thanks,
Chad B.

I feel your pain. The same is true in GA. Except herte they covered the RNY up until July 1, 2005. My wife had hers July 30, 05 , but we thought it would be too hard for us both to do this at the same time with a 4 yr old. I have all of the co-morbidities and I have the apnea so bad that my only alternative for relief is weight loss or a Trach!
