I just applied for benefits at my job last Tuesday and wanted to know how long it takes for me to receive my card.   I was told that I should wait until my card comes before i start making my appointments.  I am so anxious to start the whole process.

Maria: Nobody will know that answer except your job.  Does your insurance coverage actually kick in the same day you start?  Most places have a 60 or 90 day probationary period before your insurance in started.  Then you'll also want to check to see if there's the standard 18-month pre-existing condition clause where you can't be treated for an old condition during the first 18 months of your insurance coverage.   I'm sure your HR department will have thse answers for you. Depending on when your benefits commence, you could technically seek services without your health plan card.  However, some provider's offices will not see you without it, even if you provide all the necessary information for them to check your benefits. And just as the previous poster stated, be mindful of any waiting requirements surrounding when your benefits begin.
