Getting Health Insurance AFTER Gastric Bypass

I've decided to change careers and am going back to school. COBRA is so expensive, so I decided to check out State Farm with which I have home, life and auto insurance. I was denied a basic major medical policy because I had gastric bypass surgery. I'm 4.5 years post-op. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
