trouble eating meat
I have just discovered this forum. I am 4 months post-op. I have not been able to eat any chicken or red meat since my surgery. I keep trying to eat some meat so I can get my protein but I ususally end up vomiting in two to four hours. I have almost been tempted just to chew and not swallow the food but spit it out. I don't think I would gain any nutrients from the food that way though. Does anybody else have problems with eating meat since their surgery? Any ideas about additional ways to take in protein beside protein bars? I have tried the Isopure drink but I did not like it. It made me extremely thirsty. I am experiencing good weight loss but I want to make sure I am nutritionally getting what my body needs. I am 13 pounds away from the 100 pound weight loss. Please e-mail me any suggestions you have. [email protected]
Hi Kathy,
Sorry to hear of your troubles with meat. I too had problems with chicken until I was about 5 months out and was told by others at support meetings that chicken was a problem for them too. I don't know if you like seafood or canned tuna but you might want to try it because this will help you get in your much needed protein. Have you tried ground beef, chicken or turkey because sometimes these are easier to digest. Also trying to make sure that your meats are cooked down very soft in fat free gravy (Franco American has all flavors from turkey to beef au jus). I am sure this is just a temporary challenge for you and it will be soon over. Take care and wish you all the best!

Thank you for your response. I have not tried ground turkey or chicken. I have tried ground beef without any luck as far as it staying down. I did have some tuna the other day. I wanted to make a grilled tuna sandwich but did not since I did not know if I could have a sandwich prepared that way. I would have probably only ate the insides of the sandwich. I have not tried the fat free gravy but I will have to look for some. I have eaten some grilled shrimp. Do you have any recipe suggestions for the tuna?
Congrantulation on your weight loss. Over 100 pounds WOW!!!!

I'm 8 months out and still cannot eat chicken or beef. I'd love to eat healthy, but still can't tolerate most vegetables either. Cottage cheese, soft tofu, and strangely enough shreaded pork (carnitas) seem to work for me. Low fat cheese also works well for me as does packaged turkey (roasted turkey is too dry) I discovered an amazing protein suppliment called profect. I think the website is www.proteca.com They are tubes of only 3 oz. of liquid, fruit flavored and contain 25 grams of protein. They've been a lifesaver. You can order 4 tubes to try out and see how you like it. Almonds also work for me, but they have a lot of fat. Hope this helps.
Dear Merril,
I have never tried shredded pork. I guess I will have to try it the next time we eat at my daughter's favorite restaurant, LA FAMILIA. I don't have a problem with low-fat cheese or cottage cheese either. I am still
experimenting with the vegetables. So far, carrots and peas are ok.
I guess I will just have to adjust to life without meat. I have been supplementing my protein with Nectar fruit drinks. Thanks for the suggestions.
I hope you have a great Christmas!

Everyone is different in how they are effected when eating meats. I can eat hamburger and chicken if it's really soft and tender and I chew like crazy. I also will just eat a mouthful and that's it so I avoid throwing up.
I can't touch pork and sometimes if ribs fall off the bone I can eat it but most of the time avoid meats. They say the further out you get the more you can eat and I'm finding that to be true.
How about crab meat in the cans? I can eat that.
My problem I'm having now is bad gas and the awful farts.

I cannot eat chicken. I am 4 months post op and yet when I was two months post op I could eat chicken. Weird!!
I can eat ground beef and only very recently have managed to eat very thinly sliced beef from the deli. Have you tried that? It has to be the very thinly sliced though.
It is a problem knowing what to eat. I sometimes think I eat too much bread. Although I always eat Weigh****chers bread, it is still too many carbs. Maybe I will give that up.
