I am 3 years post op. I got married 6 months ago, I quit smoking 8 months ago and I am eatting so much more now. I went from 161 last june to 194 last month! I am scared of gaining all of the weight back. I know that I need to cut out the wine after dinner. Has anyone else gained back this amount of weight and lost it again????

Tracy, I am only 3 weeks post-op, so am no where near the experience as you are, but my question is have you increased your amount of exercise with your increased food intake? I am not sure what type of surgery you had, but remember, the intestines do physiologically adapt after 18-24 months and malabsorption is no longer the case...maybe if you just increased your amount of cardio exercise each week? Tracy: I too, am experiencing the same issue. I am 2 1/2 year post op and have gained 25 pounds. I married last year and noticed a weight increase although I was exercising. I will admit I am not exercising as I did in the begining which has contributed to my weight gain. I am not sure how to lose the weight either. I have cut out alcohol about 2 months ago. But I find nothing makes me ill if I eat, do you have this problem? I too would like advice how can I reverse my weight gain? How common is weight gain after a successful surgery?

Lisa, Not much makes me sick except ice cream and chips if I eat to many. Funny you mention drinking, I woke up this morning and said I was cutting that out to see if it would boost my wieght loss (we like wine with dinner normally). I pulled out some pictures last night of right before we got married and cried, I do not look the same. I have to change my patterns, I realized yesterday trhat I am a creature of habit. I eat breakfast at work, so when I walk in the door, I am thinking about food. That is my problem I am always thinking about food that is how I got fat to begin with. I am going to try a eatting schedule. That way I will not have to worry about if I am hungry or not. We are going to Floriday in 1 month and I am determined to lose 10 pounds by then at least. Good luck to you.

You sound a lot like me. I'm a lil over 2 years post-op and I've completely stopped loosing and I'm on a slow regain right now. I'm even one step worse than you though. Instead of thinking about food right when I get to work. I think about food within 5 minutes of waking up! Like I wake up, go to the bathroom, and think...mmmmm I can't WAIT to eat my cereal! I'll feel so much better! UGH! I eat a lot of candy and junk at work too. I feel like I eat ALLLL the time! Not much makes me sick either but the two things you mentioned. Ice cream and chips if I eat a lot. Does that stop me really? no What to do?

Hi there. I'm almost a year post-op. I heard from my doctors and such that it's normal to gain some of the weight back, though obviously not all of it. I don't know how much you lost, so I can't judge whether 25 is a huge gain back or not. But there does seem to be a pattern: after 24 months, some of the weight comes back as you "settle." Also, some of us stop exercising and doing the protein/water regimen after that period of time, maybe because we think we don't need it anymore. I would say maybe try some new exercises (keep yourself from getting bored or stale with one particular kind), keep doing the water/protein, and you should be able to maintain where you are, if not lose that 25 pounds again.

When I married I gained all my weight. It seems to be the common thread. Also quitting smoking is a huge adjustment for your body. I know for me excercise helps a lot. Though I understand the motivation is difficult. I truly believe if we make a rule not to eat with our spouses we wouldn't have the weight problem. It just finding something else to do with them. There should be a warning: Marriage may cause weight gain. Jonathan

I think you are gaining because you quit smoking. i quit 6 months post op and haven't lost another pound since then....even with all the exercise I get, I walk 4 miles almost every day, and I lift weights 3 times a week. I think that smoking speeds up the metabolism, and when you quit it takes a long time to get it going again. Hang in there.
