How does bread affect you?

I'm almost 6 weeks out from surgery and starting to eat actual food again.  Sometimes I throw up my food and it's usually white mucous looking stuff...not the food itself. Is that the bread that I ate with the hamburger etc?  For now I'm gonna try skipping any bread and see if I get the same results..same food but minus the bread.  Could the bread be getting mushy and stuck in my esophagus? Just wondering why I can eat something and about 45 mins later I will gag and throw up this stuff.

Thanks, Tee

Bread, rice, potatoes, really any starches were a HUGE issue for me for the first 9 months....then I was slowly able to add some back...but not much.  It might be the culprit....every issue is a game to see what the offending food is!

I haven't tried bread yet or anything major carby, but could that be what people call the "foamies"?  If it is just mucus that is what I would guess.

I think you are sliming or doing what is called the "foamies".  That is basically the mucus that lines our throat which is trying to help you push the bread through.  I'm guessing it is a little early for you to try bread, I am a year out and bread is still not possible for me.  I can do toast, but only of whole grains--wouldn't try white because there just isn't enough nutritional value to me.

So you might want to wait a few months, then try again and see if the foamies have been eliminated by aging your pouch a little more--or you may not be able to do it.

I'm almost 3 years out, but I don't eat bread at all. I was told it expands in the pouch. I also have reactive hypoglycemia, so it's too carby for me. I'm not surprised though that you are having trouble with a regular hamburger with bread. It seems pretty early out. Might want to try less dense foods and you won't have that problem. I would also be a tad worried about stretching out my stoma.

I had the "foamies"...it's sooooo gross!!!  Didn't seem to matter what I ate...I thought maybe it had to do with the healing and adjustment process.  If I remember correctly,  I ate a lot of softer foords again and only did a new food evry other day or so until this stopped.  Lasted about 3 weeks for me.

Good luck!!    If the food comes back up, check in with your Dr.

I'm about 3.5 months out from RNY.  If I have a bite of bread, I feel swollen and sick.  And sometimes do vomit, but it's not the "foamies".  I've pretty much decided to stay away from all breads, rice, and pastas and may try again in a few months.  Strangely, I can eat some crackers (like 4 or so), and some potato chips (maybe a handful) without getting sick at all.

I have discovered that I can't eat bread made with yeast! Makes it too fluffy and too easy to expand in my esophagus.

BUT I can eat a few corn tortilla chips with salsa, flat crackers, popcorn, and things like that. I can eat a few Fritos...so I suspect it's the yeast that makes it hard for us.

I'm not craving bread anymore which is good - it was a huge downfall for me so I'm going with the flow and leaving it alone. I'm determined to eat healthier and not try to tempt myself.

I have eaten a small tablespoon of Basmati rice and it went down fine. I would not try plain white rice tho...Basmati is firmer and does not expand like the other. I can also eat a small spoon of Mexican rice or brown rice.

But now that I realize I have such a small pouch I am making better choices of what goes into the pouch first - which is protein. So I eat the carbs last if I still just have to have something...

I passed my 3 month mark yesterday!!! I've lost 64 lbs so far...got another 45 or 50 to go now...

Cheers!! Tee
