Meat keeps making me throw up...

Oh, I feel so icky!

I had an RNY on 10/27/09, and whenever I eat meat, regardless if it's a tougher steak or a minced chicken or cold tuna or flaky salmon, it ALL feels like a lead ball in my stomach, and it's SO hard to not throw up.  A couple days ago I had just TWO ounces of poached salmon at a friend's house, and while I was driving home I had to pull over to throw up!  Thank God it was dark out!

I eat slow, I chew TONS, and don't drink when I'm not supposed to (before, during, or two hours after).  If I eat something that's not meat, like cheese, portabella mushrooms, or even something carb filled like bread (which was lunch today), I'm completely fine!  But meat...ugh!

Has anyone else had this problem?  I've started doing a lot of protein substitutions, like cheese, mushrooms, protein shakes, high protein yogurt, cottage cheese, boiled eggs whites (scrabled make me throw up, too!), etc., but I end up eating so many more calories trying to get up to my 100 g of protein my doc told me to get to!

Could someone give me some other high protein ideas or at least let me know I'm not the only one who's had this problem?  I have a couple friends who have odd food issues now who live on nothing but pretzels, but that doesn NOT a healthy make!

Maybe try not eating a slab of meat?  Consider other countries, they don't eat a slab of meat, they have a little meat with a lot of veggies.

What about something like this....

Tex Mex Chicken Salad

1/2 c Garlic EVOO
1/2 tsp pepper
1 tsp (or more) of chili powder
1/2 tsp kosher salt
1/3 tsp cumin

Mix well, let sit while you cut up veggies

1 C black beans
1 C diced chicken
1/8 C red bell pepper
1/8 C green bell pepper
1/2 C diced red onion
1/4 C finely chopped yellow squash and/or zucchini
1 rib celery

Add each ingredient to the dressing mixture at a time.  Toss, add another ingredient, toss, etc.

This way it isn't a heavy solid protein sitting in your pouch.  I know we are supposed to all eat protein first but that isn't working for you so maybe mix protein sources and textures as well?

Hi, I had my rny on Dec. 11, 2009. I kind of have the same problem. My nurse that calls to check up on me told me that it takes some people up to one year to eat meat. I cant eat chicken or pork without feeling horrible. I developed gallstones, but prior to this I was already feeling this, but now it feels worse. The nurse did tell me to stick to exactly what you are eating and drinking. Have you called your doctors office and asked for some advice or guidance? Back in Jan. I was having a hard time with all foods, especially solids, with pain and throwing up alottttt, ended up I had developed stenosis. I had an endoscopy with dilatation done and it was all good for about 3 to 4 weeks, then I had to go back for another endoscopy with dilatation. Good luck, I hope it works out for you, I know it sucks! At one point I couldn't even keep water down. I understand the discomfort your feeling and hope it gets resolved soon.

I feel your pain!  I'm 5+ years out and I STILL can't eat any meat.  I live on greek yogurt, cheese, protein shakes (which I LOVE thankfully)...I will try scrambled eggs every now and then and still can't keep them down.  My pouch is like a newbie pouch.  My doctor says that I really kept the integrity of it and have not stretched it out at all....It is what it is...  :)

Keep trying, maybe you will be able to tolerate meats in a few months.

Best of luck to you!

Try mixing a little cottage cheese with your eggs and then scamble them, it makes them really soft and you can't even taste the cottage cheese. I tried it and I had no problems with them at all.

Hi guys!

Thanks for the help...I eventually went to my doc and told him what's up and on Friday I'm going in for surgery! He says my stoma is too tight...I'm so glad it's not something *I* did! I'm excited about this (who says that?!) because now I can go back to eating protein and lose some more weight. I've hired a personal trainer but I've only lost 81 pounds in the past five months cuz I'm stuck eating not protein-y things, except beans!

Good luck on your surgery. I'm glad your dr. found the problem.
