3 months post op - should I be eating more?
Hello All,
Can anyone help me out, I had my surgery on Dec 7 and all went well for the first few weeks. However I'm now 3 months post-op and feel I should be further along on my eating. Don't get me wrong the weight loss is great, but I'm starting to wonder if this is normal.
I can no longer tolerate the protien shake and have not been drinking them for about 4 weeks. I can only eat very, very small amounts and keep in things like cereal, soup, crackers, cheese yougart and tin fruit. I can't eat any meat, potato's, rice, bread, even vegetables without getting really sick. So is this normal, please give me some suggestion?
thanks for everyones help.

I am a almost 17 months out and my experience is that I can eat things now that I could not eat this time last year. So with that said yout ability to eat a greater variety should improve over time.
Secondly, make sure the foods you are eating are a bit moist and not dried out, they are harder for us to digest.. I also find for me even now, that the higher the protein the more difficult for me to digiest. Chew your foods well and eat slowly, that tends to help me.. You may find that some foods may always be prohibitive to your tummy or you maybe able to get away with small quantites over time.
Lastly make sure you are getting the suggested protein and taking your vitamins, because you don't want to get sick or have your hair fall out while you are trying to adjust to the foods. If you cannot get the protein in you should really check with your surgeon or nut.
Good luck and I am so happy for you that the weight is dropping off..............
I had my surgery on 9/15/2009- I would say in the last month or so my appetite as well as the range of foods that I can eat has really improved. - almost too much... ! I still don't like potatoes, and I was told not to ever eat breadd. I would say I was exactly where you were at the same time. I really had to find foods that I could eat and tolerate and slowly build on it. One thing that helped was high protein oatmeal-and I added a little peanutbutter to it- whipped so less calories and sugar. I would back up and go back to what works until your stomach calms down. and then try again.
i have not had the surgery yet but i was informed by the dr and the nurse that we should not eat rice or bread. because they expand in our stomachs after eating them..especially rice..and they also i know baratric advantage has alot of things u can eat and drink for protein maybe that would help..just given my 2 cents..oh and they also informed us that some veggies wouldnt be tolerated after the surgery
I can't eat rice or bread...they hurt, but I am finding other things I can eat. Also I finally found a protein supplement I really can drink and I've tried many!! Last night for dinner I had tender roast beef and it was great, even though I can't do any kind of steak or burgers. I think we're all different, we can'ty eat different things, we heal at different rates and what works for one doesn't work for the next one. It seems to be a matter of finding our way through the best we can until we find a routine that works for us for a while.
