Sweet Tea!

Ok OH community, I have something to ask about. Sweet Tea! What do you think, good bad or indifferent? It can have almost as much sugar as a soda and with caffeine however its not carbonated, so is it still alright to drink? I know the simple easy answer is everything is ok in modest amounts but I just have to admit, this is my new soda addiction. I roughly have one 20 - 32 oz glass of it a day. Sometimes I make it through the whole glass sometimes not, but should I steer away from this all together? I seem to be still losing weight, but like most I'm trying to keep old habits and create a new lifestyle where food nor liquids control me. What do you guys think?

I am only 2 weeks out from RNY surgery and just got "attacked" in the OH chatroom for sipping  skim chocolate milk  over the past 2 days since I've been off the clear fluids because of its sugar content. Truthfully, I think the ones who lectured me were jealous that they dump just thinking about chocolate milk. I am going to give up the chocolate milk even though it soothes my stomach. I think it has a lot less sugar in it than the apple or other juice that has been recommended to me, but I'm going back to water. It's up to you and your dietician...personally, I don' t like the idea of ingesting too much aspartame or artifical sweeteners in place of sugar, but your doctor or dietician can advise you better than anyone on here I"m sure. Keep up the great progress.
Sincerely,
Tina

Good point! Yeah being as close to your surgery date ... I'd just go by what you're doctor has advised you too, if he thinks skim chocolate milk is alright then the others can go jump in a lake. But for me I'm 3 months post op and the further out post op you are the less you see your doctor so thus is the reason I'm posting this. Besides, its still a learning curve on what and how we should eat even post op ... so don't lose faith in other's advice ... and you know there are a-holes everywhere. I hope you are feeling good by now, and you're going to be so glad you made this healthy choice to help you in your weight loss!! Thank you for the advice and encouragement!!

I did the same thing your doing by replacing soda with sweet tea and it didnt seem to bother me at first and I was still losing and the next thing you know I was slowly noticing that I wasnt losing and I wasnt gaining so I backed off the tea and I began losing again so be careful and if you notice a platuea then I'd suggest droping off the tea.. Like you said you dont want to pick up another addiction were here to make healthy lifestyle changes not swap addictions.

Good luck

Instead of sugar, how about splenda?  I have to use it because I am allergic to the nutrasweet.  That way I can still make it sweet without the calories.  I don't drink a lot of tea and recently have been really bothered by sweet stuff, but I have used the splenda.  I try to stay away from sugar, but sometimes I will have a "real" sweet tea.  The sugar will eventually cause you to stop losing, plus you just don't want to keep that addiction to it.  Good Luck!

Getting colories in drinks - is never a good idea.  Sweet Tea has a lot of sugar in it.  These are simple carbs that eventually may catch up with you.  No nutrition - just calories.

being from the south, i'm definitely a sucker for sweet tea. i stopped using sugar though. splenda tastes pretty dang good in it and doesn't leave u with that weird aftertaste like some other artificial sweeteners.

O.M.G!  I'm a sweet tea junkie too and I had gotten back into drinking sugary tea after surgery... BUT I recently found this herbal tea concentrate that has the antioxidant benefits of green tea but tastes like normal tea... and I sweeten it a little with the low cal stevia stuff... it satisfies my tea tastes and it helps me get my water in because I've never been much of a water drinker but I'll sip on my glass of tea ALL DAY LONG!
you can get the tea powder at www.jraymall.com
and the stevia sweetener can be found in the sugar aisle next to the usual Equal and sweet n low, etc.  there are different brands that use stevia... I've tried several... just read the nutrition facts on the back, taste test, and find one that's right for you...
