6 days post op - what the heck, How am I going to get it in?
Hello Everyone,
I need some help.
I'm 6 days post op, and I just can't drink all that protien. It's not that it tastes bad, I just feel full. Should I skip the broth & jello, and just stick to the protein?
What kinds of things were you able to eat on a full fluid diet, and how much?
Gosh, I never thought I would suffer this problem...can't wait to chew again.
Thanks for the support

Hello. I am about 2 and a half weeks out. Every doctor's plan is different but my Nut and Doctor told me fluids first then protein, however the protein shakes counted for fluids so I worked at getting the protein. Hang in there it gets easier. I walked with water all day-- I sipped in the shower, while drying my hair, etc.
Good luck!
Good luck!
Hi Siobhan,
My surgeon is in Guelph, and he had me on broth, jello for 2 weeks ( clear fluids). Then, Full fluids which means hot cereal, low fat yogurt, pureed vegetable soup or strained cream soups, v8 juice, no sugar added puddings, juice etc. You wil notice there is no mention of protein shakes. His office/dietician does not believe in using protein shakes. They believe you can get your nutritional needs met with food and a multivitamin ( at 3 months out). Just to put things in perspective for you. I know each dr. is differnent. I was on optifast for 2 weeks prior to surger and basically...drank water, tea and Molson 67 (LOL) because I could not stomach the optifast shakes. I lost 12 lbs in 8 days during that time. The weight was falling off. It has slowed down since I've been more sedentary during recovery and am VERY constipated, but I wouldn't sweat the lacking desire for protein at this stage. We are at almost the same stage. I had surgery Dec 3. Keep in touch!

Hi Tina,
Thanks for the update. Are you on solid foods yet, if so are you able to keep it in? I can't even eat 1/4 cup of soup yet, and should be on puree foods now. I was told to drink 2 protein shakes on the 3rd & 4th week post-op. It's funny how they all have different methods of what to do. I get constipated as well, I guess nothing much going in, nothing much going out....
Food just sits on my chest like I'm about to have a heart attack, and I have to be sick to feel better, I'm really not sure if this is normal????
Stay in touch, and have a Merry Christmas

Hi Siobhan,
I amnot on solids yet, but have tried a few very well chewed pieces of soft food and I'm fine. I think you are normal, and I am less sensitive than the regular bypass patient. I have been trying things about a week ahead of schedule the whole time with no problems. I've vomited once, but I do have that feeling of food on my chest now and again. Sugar does not make me dump, but it does make me a little nauseous so I steer clear. I did sip diet egg nog a bit. I am sticking to my plan, but forget to sip enough****er. I can eat 1/4 cu p of anything soft as long as I eat slowly...very slowly and remember not to drink water with it. That is a hard habit for me to develop...eating and drinking separately?? I am always thirsty...the dehydration has slowed my weight loss significantly, but I'm working on it:)
Take care, and I will keep in touch! You too!

hI...it seems so long ago I remember this frustration too!
I say fluids, fluids, fluids...the foods (protien) will come. And boy I missed chewing too. that too will happen soon enough. it can be tough going, but hang in there it does get better.
I wasn't able to drink the protein shakes, they made me ill. So I just did broth/water and diet jello for the first 2 wks.
I also found apple juice a comfort when I felt I need something different than broth. I had very little to start with, your tummy will know. take things slow, it will all come together soon and these forum are great to help with quesitons you have.
Good luck! and congrats and continued success along your new journey you have embarked upon.

Hello,
When I had a bout with jejunitis and couldn't eat for several weeks, my nutritionist offered me this recipe. I call it Super Broth. For some reason, i find it more filling than store bought broth, and it is thicker, but not creamy. I'm not a doctor, but I'm wondering if possibly this might help anyone. When I require a liquid diet, like before a colonoscopy or endoscopy, this helps me. The doctor always mentions that my "insides are very clean."
Super Broth
1 whole raw chicken, beak and feet added if possible, well cleaned
1 cleaned onion, halved
2 carrots, scrubbed and broken in half
2 or 3 ribs of celery, scrubbed and broken in half
1/4 c vinegar (distilled I think)
a couple cloves of garlic
Water to fill the pot
boil the whole thing, adding water as needed, for 8-12 hours. Cut the chicken up once it is cooked, just use the spoon and mash the carcass into pieces. After the 8-12 hours, strain the solids from the broth. Do NOT use a cheese cloth or very fine sieve because you'll strain out the nutrients from the dissolved bone. DISCARD the solids, yes even the chicken, which tastes like cooked cardboard by now. Retain the broth. I think the nutritionist said the vinegar softens the bones, and pulls the nutrients from the meat, bones, and veggies. Sometimes I add parsley at the end, but you don't want to cook the parsley too long. I forget why.
