Eating After the Band but Before the First Fill

I had my lap band 8 days ago.  I've lost 17.5 pounds.  I started solids yesterday.  What I eat puts me around 500 calories a day.

Today I got hungry for the first time since the surgery.  I really got hungry.  I ate 1/4 cup of tuna with some light mayo.  I waited an hour to make sure, but was really hungry so I ended up eating 1cup of refried beans with a few diced tomato peices mixed in.

Part of me feels bad.  But I added up my calories - Even with the 4th meal I ate less than 700 calories today,

I knew that eventually my swelling would go down and my stomach would be normal for several weeks before my first fill - I just didn't think I'd get hungry so soon.

Does anyone have advice on how to survive the time period after the swelling has gone down and before the first fill?  I want to maintain what I've lost - heck even lose more weight!

Thanks,
Elizabeth

HI,
Yes, I was was hungry at about 1 week post op.

don't get overly concerned with losing weight the first month - you need to concentrate on changing your eating habits, eating slowly, chewing food ALOT, and walking to get your strength back.

I just had my third fill (3 months post-op).  Have lost 25 pounds and the third fill is the charm for me.   I now really feel the restriction.   Before the third fill, I could easily eat 1800 calories a day - maybe more.  Now I am down to about 1000-1300 since the band is now where it needs to be.
It may take a few fills to get to your right adjustment.  Just hang in there!   You won't gain the weight back unless you start eating and drinking sweets.  Follow the diet plan your doctor provided and you'll be great!

And exercise!!

I didn't lose any weight from week 5 to week 9.   Now, I've lost 10 pounds in a month.  Everybody is different - just keep the faith!   Good Luck!

Thanks.  Yeah, I'm just trying to follow the diet as best I can.  Today I had a 4th meal.  Just as healthy as the others, but I was hungry.  Even so, I'm sure I didn't get over 1000 calories today.

I think when the swelling goes down more I might end up hungrier.  We'll see.

After losing 17 pounds so quickly, I was excited to lose more just like that.  In the last week though, I've only lost 1.5 pounds.

Ah well, it will happen eventually.

I 'm so relieved to hear others are HUNGRY- 5 1/2 weeks since banding and I was hungry 1 week after; never had nausea. pain, or anything that would make me less hungry; 1st fill in 5 days; called Dr Tersigni's office 3 times to convice them to give me a fill and no budging from them. I have managed to loose 5 lbs since banding, (25lbs. in all); I am eating smaller portions ,  your posts have made me feel better- thanks

Hi all,
Have been at 6 cc's now for two weeks, and will give it a few more weeks to decide if I should have doc take 1/2 cc out.   Unbelievable difference between 5 & 6 cc's.   I have some trouble drinking water now and I used to drink ALOT of water.   My stomach is really tight during the night if I get up to get a drink of water.  I also CANNOT drink any water until everything makes it way thru the band.   It definitely takes some getting used to.  I find myself really thinking about what I put in my mouth now.  It's actually a kind of liberating feeling - to know that I'm starting to gain control!!

I forgot to say in my last post that my body must have gone into survival mode the after the initial 15 pound weight loss, because it didn't want to give any up for almost two months.   So don't get frustrated!   It's a long term journey for us!   I, too, want a quick weight loss, but I find that my thinking is starting to change and I am beginning to accept that very slow weight loss is OKAY!!

I had to buy new pants this week!  Was a size 20 - now a 16.   WOOHOO!!!

Here's an update, I'm 5.5 weeks out now.  I've lost 29 pounds.  I notice that when I feel hungry, it's on days where I'm behind on drinking water.  Sometimes I have had enough water and I fell hungry anyway.  I don't get upset with myself though.  I go ahead and eat a 4th meal.

I'm still pretty much restricted to eating the size of an egg at a time.  My first fill was cancelled for that reason.  I'm losing abour 3 pounds a week now, so there doesn't seem reason to add more restriction.

My husband had his surgery 3.5 weeks ago.  He woke up from surgery hungry.  He has no restriction whatsoever.  He has tried, but isn't doing so well with following the diet.  I think he is trying to get enough water in though.

We both have our first fill set on the same date now, Dec 15.  Hopefully that will give him some restriction and take away my residual hunger.

In just over 1 month I weigh less than I have for over 2 years.  I'm starting to feel like my old self again.

Good luck to everyone!
