excessive stomach acid

I have been sick for the last couple of weeks with excessive stomach acid and severe heart burn.  As a result i've had constant trouble keeping food and liquids down and i became dehydrated and had to go to the hospital for IV fluids.  Prior to this  I was on Prilosec but it seemed like it had stopped working.  Now i'm on Prevacid twice a day and it seems to be working.  Has anyone had any trouble with their GERD worsening post op?  I was under the impression that GERD usually got better not worse.  Leave it to my body to go against the norm.  LOL.  Any feedback will be very appreciated.

My dr. gave me a 1 month script for Prevacid after my surgery, and I didn't have any heartburn while I was taking it.  Then I ate 1/2 a boca burger one night, and had seasoned it up, and had the worst heartburn early the next morning that would not go away.  I took my husbands omeprazole for a couple days, and seemed okay.  Then it happened again.  I talked to my doctor about it, and they wrote me one more script of Prevacid for 1 month, and said I shouldn't have gerd or heartburn after the surgery.  Said if I continue he would go down with a scope to see why.  I was on Prilosec before my surgery for some years, and I really wish he would continue that (or something) for awhile.  I don't really have any answers or advice for you, I'm just letting you know my story.    Becky

Thank you Becky for sharing your story.  Makes me feel not so alone or like maybe i did something wrong, though I have no idea what that would be.  I am supposed to be having a scoping done but still waiting to hear back from the nurse as to when. Also doing an UGI with barium swallow. Yuck.  But its necessary. Let me know how you do with your scoping.

I have had horrible heartburn / acid reflux for years.  Having my WLS in February 2008 didn't stop it at all.  If anything, it got worse.  I've been on Nexium 40mg 2 times a day since surgery.  When I've run out, the heartburn and pain is beyond horrible.  I've had 3 scopes done on me.  They discovered I had a stricture, and an ulcer in the first.  Said they fixed them (doubtful).  In the second one, it was just seeing if the ulcer and stricture were fixed.  The third was to widen the opening to my intestines, as the dr felt that was causing my issues with alot of vomiting and nausea.

The last scope was in May, and here it is November, I'm still in pain, and still having terrible heartburn.  I'm currently waiting on an order of Nexium, so I've been using Prilosec, which isn't nearly as strong, and I have to take alot more of just to get some relief.

Hopefully the dr's will eventually figure out what this pain and heartburn is really from and fix it.  There are days when I'm in so much pain I actually wish I'd never had this surgery.  Heartburn was bad before, but at least there wasn't pain
