You're going to have far worse problems than just your hair falling out if you don't get your protein.  You need at LEAST 60 grams per day.  Maybe more.

What protein drinks have you tried?  How have you prepared them?  You can get samples of lots of different drinks at www.vitalady.com.  Also try some samples from www.chikenutrition.com.  Then visit www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com and check out all her yummy protein shake recipes.

Also, you can get some unflavored protein powder and add it to foods.  I put it in soups, stews, chili, yogurt, ricotta cheese, pudding, mashed potatoes... just about everything.  Just add a little bit at a time.  If you add too much, your food will take on a gross gritty texture.

Have you tried Greek yogurt, like Fage or Chibani?  It is much higher in protein than regular yogurt.

Thanks for all the hints Kelly. I'm doing clear liquids in preparation for surgery Tuesday, 9/22. I have been searching & found "Nectar" protein powder (FuzzyNavel flavor) & love it!!! It's such a refreshing change from Choc & Van shakes. Also using unflavored "AnyWhey" & it works great too. Thanks again for the websites. Renee'

Looking at your date of surgery, I assume that you are past the liquid only sequence of the post-op diet.  Therefor, you should be able to use soft foods.  I hated that stage only because I didn't like meat that was basically liquified in a blender--a personal problem with the taste and texture.  I couldn't have whey shakes due to lactose intolerance and was forced to use soy shakes ( gritty and not too good).  However, you start to have a lot more sources of protein available.  First of all there are egg whites.  Rather than refried beans, there are many kinds of beans.  Look at foodnetwork.com for vegetarian dishes.  Quinoa (sp) beans are high in protein and low in carbs and are an excellent source.  You might be able to have them in soups or blend the cooked beans with soups while you are in this stage of your diet.  Can you have peanut butter or other nut butters?  Maybe peanut butter with mashed bananas or squash such as summer squash or spaghetti squash might work.

Contact the nutritionist at your surgeon's office and see if he/she has any suggestions or restrictions.  Once you get to use solid food, you do not need the shakes.  However, many people prefer  using them as supplements because you can get high protein content for relatively low calories.  Note that many doctors do not want their patients to use shakes.

My protein life saver was mixing a scoop of vanilla protein powder with a very small amount of water then added it to my coffee to make french vanilla coffee.  The coffee flavor hid the taste of the whey protein and all you can taste is the vanilla almost identical to the french vanilla creamers.
Pam T. on this site also has the chai tea protein mix that she developed.  Its great!  I drink it everyday.
(I also could never do any protein shakes, my stomach would knot up, then would come the nausea and some times throw up)
The GNC store also makes a new protein bar called 2:1.  Its 32 grams of protein with 16 grams of carbs, hence the 2:1.  I can only eat half but thats a help.
You could also try the drink packets that have 3 gr of protein.  Helps you get in your protein and water in at the same time.
I also lived on toasted edamame (soy beans) flavors not bad and 1/3 cup has 14 gr of protein.
I also carried peanuts and beef jerky everywhere with me.
1oz of peanuts is 7gr of protein as well as the jerky.
Have you tried Power peanut butter? Flavors not bad with 24gr of protein per serving.
How about Wendys chili?
Cheese?
Fish?

Here is a website that I got a lot of good idea's from.

Good luck, you can do it!

I was the same way, I couldn't handle the protein drinks and I have tried A LOT! lol. But I have found a protein drink that is good and tastes like Nesquick, it's called MAX PROTEIN. It comes in a blue container and I got it at GNC. I know they also sell it online, I'm not sure which sites, but I know I googled it before I went to GNC. Try calling the GNC stores and find one that sells it near you and they will let you try it before you buy it! Good Luck!
