I have been plagued with gas and bloating ever since I had surgery.  I don't want to eat because everything is affected by the gas.  It hurts I am really starting to regret my surgery. I so miserable and have tried gas pills, amatiza, lactobacillus, and now I am taking align.  I am hungry and aggravated.  I don't know what else to do!

The only thing that gets rid of gas and bloating is to WALK, WALK, WALK. You should be walking 3 times a day and lying on your LEFT side to help the gas pass. When you blend your protein drinks, let them sit on the counter for 15 minutes to allow the excess air in them to rise to the surface so that it doesn't go inside YOU as you drink, OR what I finally did was simply shake them up on my own without the blender to prevent air getting mixed in. It really helped!

Make sure you are talking 30ml of Milk of Magnesia every other day to keep your bowels open until this gas problem is resolved. Believe me, it will resolve, even though you are miserable now. Taper off on your pain meds, because they are slowing down your bowels and preventing the gas from being able to get out.

Your stomach is not hungry, BTW. You are feeling head hunger even more strongly now because you are in pain, and food is the #1 way we've dealt with negative feelings in the past. Hang in there, Harris Starr! We've all been there.

Not getting the required 64 ounces of fluids can also contribute to these problems. It was also pointed out to me by a nurse our heads can't tell the difference between thirst and hunger. When I finally got my fluid intake up to speed, I was way less hungry. This same nurse also mentioned there is medical evidence artificial sweetners trigger the insulin response in GBS patients if they were diabetic or pre-diabetic prior to surgery. This also contributes to hunger, both of the head AND the real kind. I hope backing off on the lactose will help while still keeping up with your other measures. Hang in there - this too shall pass!

I am going to have my gastric bypass on Tuesday.  My dr. told me that drinking out of a straw would cause gas and bloating.  Aslo carbonated beverages.  But I am sure you know that.
Hope you start feeling better soon.

I will keep you in my prayers.  I am doing much better now.  I still have digestive problems but I am taking Align daily which has helped me a great deal.  I also walk for at least 10 min. after I eat each meal.  That helps a great deal.  Your doctor is correct about the straws and carbonated beverages.  I don't use either.  I also take the tops off of my water bottles and drink instead of sucking through the spout.  It is getting easier some days are better than others but it is worth the strugles.  I was taking 3 different insulins 5 pills and 3 inhalers daily.  I am now taking 1 insulin at night and two pills.  My insulin total on a daily basis was 213 units.  I only use 40 units daily.  I have lost 23 pounds so far so, I am very grateful for all of the responses and suggestions that are giving here.  They help me on a daily basis.  I am encouraged and determined to continue my jouney.

Thank You.

I have problems with gas - had them before the surgery.

I can't really handle milk products and artificial sweetners make me feel bad.

In the end I had to get 100% pure whey protein isolate.  There isn't anything but whey in it.  I heat up water a little bit, flavor it with some herbal tea, then add the plain powder.  I've been fine with that.

I tried some of the other protein shakes pre-surgery and they gave me so just gas/belching that I was absolutly miserable.

Good luck!
