Polycyctic Ovary Syndrome

I was just diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome).  My surgeon recommended I see an endocrinologist, because he thought more might be going on with me that was contributing to my weight gain.  I've gained 16 pounds from my all time low weight after surgery.  The endocrinologist diagnosed me with PCOS and is going to be putting me on some sort of appetite suppressant for a short period of time (2 mos or less) along with a low cal diet, upping my exercise, and closely monitoring my insulin levels.  Looks like I'll be eating a low-glycemic diet from now on...which isn't far from what we "should" be eating after surgery anyway.

I'm wondering if anyone here has been diagnosed with PCOS?  And if so...

how has it affected your post surgery weight?  Have you gained?  If so, how much over what period of time?

Do/did you have trouble conceiving due to PCOS?  I've heard not all women have trouble getting preggers with PCOS, but a lot of women do.

What treatments have you tried in order to control your PCOS?

Thanks for sharing your info!

I was diagnosed with PCOS way before my WL surgery. Prior to WLS I took meds based on my sugar levels each morning & night - a major pain, and the medication made me ill. I also worked out 4 times a week.  The PCOS was one of the deciding factors for my WLS.

I haven't noticed it affecting me after WLS. However, the low glycemic diet is key, because the weight can creep up on you quickly. Have you experienced the facial hair growth? What I like to call the wild chin hairs & the mustache thingy. I had the horrible heavy and 14 day periods too. My periods sometimes were even longer.

As for the pregnancy thing, I had a hard time getting pregnant with my 2nd child. It took 8 months(all prior to WLS).  However, I got pregnant pretty quickly with my twins - only 15 months after the 2nd child - not a planned event - wasn't using birth control because I never got pregnant many years before.

Low-glycemic & exercise.......good luck.

I did the endoc. stuff and none of it worked for me. Dr's didn't seem to know how to treat it in the 1980's. It also was one of my reasons for WLS. And after losing the 1st 50 or so # my periods came back after 23 yrs. The hair has reduced on my body except facial which is where I wi**** wasn't as prominent.  I have not been able to get preg. but I am 44 yrs old now. I think husband's sperm count is low anyways. WLS definitely was the corrective thing for me besides all of the other great things that comes with the new body. (other than the folds of fat) :)

Good luck.

I have PCOS. I was diagnosed 5 years ago but I've had it since my teenage years. What prompted me to see the doctor was that my hubby and I were trying to conceive without any luck for 3 years. They put me on Metformin 500mg twice a day and that seemed to do the trick. The regular Metformin caused my stomach to hurt so they put me on extended release and those worked great! My periods came very regularly and I conceived almost immediately. Unfortunately, I miscarried but got pregnant again 7 mos. later and now have a 3 year old.

I can't give much advice as far as post surgery goes, I just had my surgery last week. I was taken off Metformin right before the surgery so we'll see if taking off the weight helps regulate my periods.

Hope this helps a little..............................
