Well,

I am ready to make the confession.....I am a carb addict.

I had surgery 9/29/08 and have lost only 27-30 pounds (have been yo yo ing)

I need to give up carbs or this is not going to work for me.

I have had issues too. I'm trying to start over. Finding snacks that are low carb are the hardest. Nuts, beef jerky, pork rinds, cheese, boiled eggs. Things like that. On the go, smart ones and lean cuisine do have lower carb meals. Not many, but there are a few to choose from. I'm a bread lover, so I get low carb wraps to make sandwiches and thin pizzas. It's hard to be creative. Good Luck

I'm a carb addict and junk food junkie and I'm blessedly in remission since 01-29-09.  After struggling most of my life including seeking help from MSWs, psychologists, addiction therapist, and hynosis, I finally found the solution.  And, it is very easy.  I posted on the Main Forum in Jan that I was trying for the umpteenth time to stop grazing ( which I used to do as long as I was awake--dayor night) and to avoid my addictive foods.  I mentioned that I had found a book on behavioral modification that I had had for a while but that it was published in 1990.  I asked if anyone knew of a newer book that might help.

A woman who is a therapist and a food addict in remission suggested that I get the Beck's Diet Solution.  Beck's is available in the original hardcover or in a workbook form.  The author says that people only need one of the two, but I didn't know that when I ordered mine and I got them both.  They are slightly different.  I'd recommed the hardcover or both to pre-ops and just the workbook to post-ops because post-ops have already learned some of the techniques discussed in the books.

Beck's is not a diet;  rather it is set up as a 6 week course that will work with any diet.  The author provides lessons for each day of the course, i.e., 6weeks X 7 days/week = 42 lessons, after 4 introductory chapters.  I read the intro chapters in a weekend.  She suggests not getting on a diet until the 14th day of her program, but I feel that we are already supposed to be following a daily post-op food plan or diet and I see no sense in suspending it for 14 days.  I just took the attitude that I wasn't going to feel guilt nor blame myself during that time because I hadn't yet learned the preliminary techniques in the book.

Beck's has transformed my life.  I've been abstinate from carbs and junk food since 01-29-09!!!  I've lost weight for the first time in 3 years.  In fact, I've lost over 29 lbs since then.  I should mention that I am still super morbidly obese--I weighed 361.6 last Thurs at my weekly weigh-in at my cardiologist's.  The author pushes getting weighed daily but I still don't fit on a bathroom scale.  My primary want me to just continue with the weekly weigh-ins at the cardiologist's.

The author only asks that we follow the lessons in order.  I've done that and my life has been transformed.  And, I do mean all of my life.  I feel better mentally and emotionally.  I used to just feel OK and now I'm actually happy.  I used to think life was hopeless and now I'm optimistic.  Perhaps I should mention that I am bi-polar and have been retired due to that contition and on meds since Aug, 1992.  I never thought I'd feel this good.

As to the course itself, each lesson involves written exercises.  Some calendar days I've been able to do more than one lesson while other lessons have taken me a few days to complete.  I've come to realize that this is going to be an active resource for the rest of my life and I will be doing some of these lessons for the rest of my life.

So , I wholeheartedly recommend that anyone who is having a problem with post-op eating should get the book(s).  They are bright red and the author is Dr Judith Beck.  If you are familiar with what is called talk therapy or Cognitive Therapy you may know that her father, Dr Aaron T Beck started it.  Dr. Judith Beck is now the director of the Cognitive Therapy and Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania.  Bob

I would just like to say hello and I am in some what the same situation.  I had my surgery on 9/23/08.  Just a few days before you!!! :)  As of today April 8th 2009 I have lost 40 pounds.  I had reached 45 pounds but have been on medicine for hives this past week and have gained 5 pounds of fluid weight. I hope that it leaves very soon, as today was my last day on meds!!  I also have a bad relationship with carbs. I have found that if I record everything I eat on a daily basis I do better with keeping it under control. I have a very busy life though and dont keep up with that as often as I should.  My doctor seems happy with my weight loss so far but I am not as happy!  I feel like I should be doing better. I dont know if I am too hard on myself or if I need to change something. I feel your pain non the less!!! Please keep in touch and let me know if you find out the secret to this thing!! I am always looking for advice that will help me get to where I would like to be.  I have 85 pounds to go to reach that goal. I hope I make it!!!  Stay strong!

Thanks for you note.

Things are going better.  I am recording everything I hope to eat from day to day and am pretty much keeping out the carbs and sugar.

My restriction seems to be working better now so hopefully things will really kick in.

Drink lots of water and I do 30 minutes on the treadmill about 5 times a week.  makes me feel better.

Hang in there!  We will make it.

Thanks!  Making a plan, and then weighing and measuring portions is really helpful.  The pounds are continuing to drop.  6 pounds to Onederland!!!
