I am very new to all of this and had surgery a week ago.  I am so scared to eat too much so I know I am not getting enough in.  I was cleared 2 days ago to start trying soft foods.  My body is ok with applesauce and fat free refried beans but I still don't eat much more than a tablespoon at a time and usually only get in one or two of each per day.  I just tried a couple bites of scrambled eggs and we will see how it goes.

Is it normal to feel hungry this early out?

The other problem I have is that I am living with my parents who are two of the most unhealthy eating people I know.  I am getting so sick of smelling grease and I get upset when my father tells me what he is going to get (fast food) for dinner.  It's like he is rubbing it in.  It is driving me crazy!!  Funny thing is that he had RNY also 10 years ago and he chooses to not follow what he is suppose to do.  He just does not care.  Has anybody else dealt with this and how do you deal with it?

Thanks,

Charlene

I don't know about the hunger issue, I'm a pre-op, surgery is Jan 19th.  But I find it sad that  your father is not supportive of you or else he wouldn't behave as you mentioned.  I knowo I have expectations of thoses around me and I would be hurt  if I were in your shoes.

I don't know his motives but I would find other people to build your support system with.  Stay active on-line, go to you physician's support grouanything to keep on track.  Good luck with your new life.

Hugs,

Deb

Hi Charlene:

I am also on soft foods at this time.  I had my surgery 2 weeks ago.  I do not eat much at all.  I mostly drink water and drink protein shakes.  I make myself eat at least once a day, and it is usually just a few bites.  I have no appetite for the things that I can eat.  I'm hoping that when my doctor progresses my diet, I will have a better appetite for the solids like: salad, fruit, maybe some chicken.  I have tried sugar free chocolate pudding with apple sauce and non-fat milk.  It tastes like a milk shake and I can drink that pretty easy.  I have also tried bake-potatoe with cheeze on it - that's good too.

It's Christmas time and my mother who lives with me is cooking Christmas dinner here at our house. This will be my true test.

I'm sorry to hear that your family is not being supportive of what you are going through.  I'm not sure how you should handle that one.

Hang in there Charlene and try not to follow in your father's footsteps regarding his poor eating habits.
Regards,

Marti

Hi Charlene!

I am a year post op, and hunger is a constant mind game for me!  Because when I think I am hungry, I have to stop and think, "Am I really hungry or am I bored"?  And if I am hungry, I reach for a protein shake  or  another source of protein.  If I am bored, then I drink water.

You are still a newbie, so just stick to your post-op food guide and you should be fine. Remember to eat at the table, no tv, no reading, no other distractions other than concentrating on eating. It takes the brain 30 minutes to realize its taking in food, and tell you to stop.  Don't worry about the amount so much as the effort of getting your body use to food again with its new plumbing.
Now with the surgery, we will never really get that "full stomach" feeeling but as time goes on you will know how much to eat with the pouch.  Just one bite over, and you will give it back.

As far as the supportive family, I am sorry to hear that for you. Surgery is hard enough with no support, I couldn't imagine living with negative influences.  Use your father's lack of support as your inspiration to not go back to being obese and those destructive habits that brought us all here!  Say to yourself, "nothing taste as good as being heathly and thin."
I say it everytime I get tempted to eat something I know I should not!

Good Luck to you!
