Hello my surgery was almost 5 years ago. i've been good lost 125 pounds total. i did gain back 15 that my doctor had warned me about but have worked hard at keeping it at that point.
i did have some issues this past summer and now have low blood sugar that is running my life. i get episodes that are pretty scarey.
i've been for blood work that shows my levels are good except my electrolites are low so i eat more bananas and things high in electrolites. my sugerical doctor and dietician say that as long as i keep to the diet they have given me that my body should get back to normal but that it could take 3 to 4 months.
i was wondering if anyone else has had low blood sugar problems too?
any thoughts or ideas would be a big help.
right now i walk around with carbs in my pocket book along with gloucos tablets i eat every 2 to 3 hours small meals.
i have lost a couple of pounds but i'm more happy that i'm holding and not gaining with all the carbs i'm eating per the doctor i might at.
its hard to go from consitrating on eating my protein, water vegis now i have to focus on being sure to get good carbs in each meal,
gee****hought carbs were a bad thing! when thats what i should have been doing all along.
thank you for reading
good luck and god bless,
pam

Hi Pam,
I had a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy Nov 05 and have begun experiencing low blood sugar
lately.
I've always had blood sugar lows, but what makes it different now is that twice I've been asleep
and then wake up with a horrible blood sugar low, usually after eating something sugary in the
evening.  I have wised up and whenever I eat a sweet I will top it off with a protein, nuts, slice of
cheese.  So for so good.  My searches on the Internet revealed the people who have gastric
surgery can experience low blood sugar.
I think combining protein with good quality carbs is the key.  Were you eating just proteins and
vegetables when you got the bs lows?
Good luck, those bs lows are awful.

PAM,

I know for me my blood sugars go low after Ive eaten something high in carbs.  My body then produces alot of insulin to cover the increase in sugar...then when I stop eating my body cant stop the insulin production as fast and thats why I drop low.

You might try keeping a food journal and find out whats happening 1-2 hrs before your blood sugar drops.  Are u eating something high in sugar or are u eating an all protien meal and not getting enough carbs.

If you have any questions and want to send me a private message I will be happy to help u thru this problem.  Im a nurse and I work with blood sugar problems pretty often not to mention having my own.

I would check because I'm not sure about after surgery but I have always had problems with low blood sugar and the only way to feel consistently good was to not eat sugar or carbohydrates that are easily converted.  Eating the carbohydrates causes your blood sugar to go up which causes your body to produce insulin to uptake the sugar and then you need more sugar to replenish.  It is a vicious cycle.  If you stick to proteins, you may feel like crap for a day or two but eating carbs is only a quick fix and you will continue to have those problems unless you eliminate them.  I could drink a 'real' mountain dew nowadays and it will wreak total havoc with my blood sugar.  You may be able to tolerate certain things but that is determined on an individual basis.

Hi,
I am 3 years post-op and really started experiencing low blood sugar almost immediately after surgery. Over the 3 years it progressively got worse. So bad, that when I took a 4 hours glucose test, my blood sugar went down to 40 within an hour and 1/2 of starting. My sugars dropped down into the fifties several times a day. I also gained 30 pounds as a result.

As of January 1st, I started the South Beach Diet...and I am doing great!!!  My blood sugar has been level without any dips and I have lost 6 pounds in six days! I highly suggest getting the book, because it explains why low blood sugar occurs and how to combat it. You can do the diet as a lifestyle (maintenance phase) if you do not need to lose weight. I highly recommend it!

Blessings,
Tess

I will be 5 years post-op this November and recently was diagnosed with Hypoglycemia after having the fasting glucose test - my low was 22!  I usually have a piece of candy and then a spoonful of peanut butter to get my sugar level back up and stable.

Glad the South Beach Diet is working for you!  Connie

Congrats on your success. I too have low blood sugar problems. I always carry glucose tablets. You can get them at walgreens in the diabetic aisle. just suck on 2 of them when you feel yourself getting weak. They take about 3 minutes to work. I TRY TO EAT 6 SMALL MEALS A DAY TO KEEP MY SUGAR LEVAL. ALWAYS CARRY A protein bar in your purse and car for emergencies. Take one day at a time. You are a strong and healthy person now.
