I feel uncomfortably stuffed all the time

I had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass on June 10th and quickly recovered in about a week and a half. During that time, I was eating fine - getting more than 80oz of water a day, easily taking in 6-8 Tablespoons of pureed food per meal and taking three protein shakes a day. I had no aversions to any foods and experienced no dumping from sugar. I would get full really quick, which is exactly what I wanted. Then suddenly, about three weeks out from surgery, I had this extremely painful experience one morning, taking my pills. I mixed my urisidiol up in a spoonful of yogurt, took my chewable multivitamin, took my sublingual b12, took my b-complex pill with a little water, took a prilosec with a little water, then took two halves of my gemfibrozil with water. At that point, I was feeling a little stuffed, but a took a sip of water and all of a sudden WHAM! I had the awful excruciating pain in my stomach. It was like my puch was seizing up and having a spasm every 30-40 seconds. I broke out in a heavy sweat, I could barely stand during each spasm, and I had dry heaves three or four times. I'm sure it only lasted a few minutes, but it seemed like an eternity. Eventually, I found that if I held my left arm up over my head, it sort of stretched things out a little and relieved some of the pain. 20 minutes later, it was like it never happened. As best as I can guess, I either got an air bubble trapped, or maybe one of my pills got stuck in the opening of my pouch. Since then, though, I have completely lost my appetite, and I feel uncomfortably stuffed. I can barely tolerate the thought of eating. When I do eat, it does not hurt or make me feel nauseous or anything... I just can't bring myself to eat anything. I can drink water just fine, though. I've been managing to get at least two protein shakes a day and maybe a yogurt or one meal, but I'm certainly just barely getting 60g of protein a day and maybe 600-800 calories. I started making my protein shakes with a dollop of ice-cream each, just to get my calorie count up a few hundred, but I still feel I'm not getting in enough. I did notice that after taking a BM, the stuffed feeling did subside a bit, but not completely. I have horrible constipation - maybe 1 BM every 4 days. I'm consistently losing about 1-2 pounds a day. Has anyone else had a similar problem, where they suddenly had a painful swallowing experience, and then had a tight, over-full feeling for multiple days?

I would consult the doctor if it ever happens again, it does sound like a pill got stuck. (Let your surgeon know about that episode.) I had surgery 6/3, I've yet to get the goal amount of protein or water in per day, but I keep trying. Last week I called my doctor and let him know that I was constipated, he said to take Milk of Magnesia (sp?) according to the instructions on the bottle until things got "moving".....I did and that resolved the problem. I think I'm only eating 500 calories per day, I probably average 48 oz of water, and with my protein goal of 54 grams, I probably get 40 down. I didn't know eating could be such a chore. Protein shakes are intolerable to me for the most part. I felt nauseous most of the time for the first 4 weeks, but that is a little better now, it may have been that my stomach was swollen and still healing. I hope you do well!

My surgery was 6/24 and I just started eggs, tuna, etc. onTues. Today I tried tuna for the 1st and probably last time. I had exactly what you described. I will NEVER eat tuna again and it used to be one of my faves. I am exhausted from vomitting too.

Mike, I've had that same experience lots of times and for me it's when I take meds that upset my stomach. I make something warm and try and drink it and it helps calm my spasms down, that's the advice I got from my surgeon. Take care, Loni
