Post-Op and Anorexic or Bulimic?
I'm in treatment, round #2, for bulimia. I am 2-1/2 years RNY post-op. I'd like to make contact with others who have had the surgery and are now diagnosed or struggling with an eating disorder. For my, my compulsive overeating simply took on a new form after surgery.
I'm finding that many of us have similar stories and face similar obstacles. Let's share!
Email me directly, send a message. Whatever you feel comfortable with.
Thanks!
Jen
Welcome to my world! Blows chunks, eh? Sorry...couldn't help it...without a sense of humor, I'll go off the deep end!! I posted here a few years ago regarding bulimia.
It's been 13 years since my staple-no bypass stuff. I did very well until about 3 years into it when I discovered I could just throw up when I ate too much. I did great after counseling a few years ago, but it started back up again about 10 months ago. After my tummy tuck/hernia repair. I gained about 5 lbs from being on Boost w/iron and laying on my back for a month. Fear caused me to go back to my old "weight maintenance" ways.
I will indulge in anything I desire and then it will easily come right back up. I already went through the testing for Barrett's esophogaus about 2-3 years ago at the height of the problem. So I know how bad this is for my body. I just can't seem to stop! I have no stress in my life. No control issues. My counselor said I just enjoy food and eat too much for my body to handle post surgery. Like the Greeks and Romans of old... there's just too much good stuff! Yea, right.
The bummer of all of this is that I am NOT losing weight!! I just get tired and crappy feeling...duh- crabby, sallow skin, dead-behind-the-eyes. I take biotin to keep my hair from falling out and a multi vit to keep my body from giving out. But this is starting to get me down. I can't seem to eat fruits or vegys- I hate 'em. I just want junk. Easy to process (and unprocess!). I know if I apply myself, I can get back on the right track. I know I'll feel better, look better, think better. Be better.
I have a problem with alchohol. I stay out of bars and situations with drinking. I have been free from overdrinking for 15 years. SO... if I need food as a fuel to live, what the heck do I do? It's so easy to just say: "Don't eat, don't stock the house with junk, don't over do it, think of something else by going for a walk, listening to music, etc..." I've tried it all.
So I'm on here to get help. It DOES help... I'm eating an apple right now...yuck.
One meal at a time. Right?!
I am seeing more and more eating disorders post gastric bypass in the in peson support groups I facilitate (3) and online as well...So a friend and myself Sandra B have set up a newgroup for post-RNY (ONLY) grads (must be 1 year out) who are having issues with an eating disorder. *Yes ONLY gastric bypass and yes only those 1 yr + out and YES only those with eating disorders NOT those who want to lurk to not develop one please!).
This is a hard & very personal topic for several of us, yet we need ACTIVE support and access to resources to help us with our daily struggle. What we hope is to provide a safe environment where we can voice our issues and perhaps make progress in our very personal battle with food. I will help her moderate as I am able.
What you will find on our group is a growing files section with resources that you can access to help you in your journey. We also have links to some resources that may be of assistance as well. It is our expectation that we will continue to add to the resources as we find new things in our quest.
We decided to keep the focus of the group to those who are RNY grads so that we are all working from the same base, but realize that the eating disorders that are experienced will vary. This is not meant to detract from this current group only offer augmentation to so don't leave just join both and participate on both!
Sandra reports: "I know that for me, personally, I need an active group so that I can deal with my own food issues or I will find myself back where I began my journey in December 2003. I am headed in that direction and it is unacceptable. I can name a variety of reasons for why this is happening to me, but I freely admit that I am NOT doing my part to minimize the damage. One thing is absolutely certain for me and that is anger and avoidance is not making it any better. I am a grazer and I eat when I am not hungry."
So if you are interested in making this journey with us, please join us at:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/post-RNY_Eating_Disorders/ Please be specific about your surgery type, date of surgery, and the fact that you have an eating disorder when you apply to join as that will speed up the process for you.
Please feel free to cross post this message to other WLS groups (that is okayed with moderators first if indicated) so that we are able to reach those people who are struggling with their eating disorder. Our surgery gave us a valuable tool, but it did not include brain surgery to help us with our unhealthy relationship with food.
