Oatmeal and almonds

I've heard that eating oatmeal is one of the healthiest foods you can have for breakfast. I don't add any sugar or milk, just a little bit of peanut butter and honey with slivers of almonds and some bananas. I also heard that almonds were the best kind of snack food because they trick the stomach into feeling full before you eat. My question is, are these foods good for those of us who have had an RNY?

Yes oatmeal is fine, as are almonds. Oatmeal was a bit heavy for me not even a month ago, but seem to be doing ok with it now. I was getting tired of cottage cheese or egg beaters for breakfast and wanted to try something different. I tried the oatmeal and it just sat heavy the first time. Someone suggested a particular Organic brand I got at a local organic store and it goes down fine. I dont know what the difference is, but it works!! I can't always eat the whole packet, but it is filling, and keeps you satisified long I think, so even eating half of it does the job. I crush about 5 almonds in it when I have it, with a packet of Splenda and a little soy milk.

Sara, I read that as well and I used to use that as an in-between of lunch and dinner, until I told my NP... she said it is a good* fat, but still a fat with ALOT of calories, and being RYN that is what matters most for us... it's alot of calories to take in from a little handful of nuts. Something more dense and less fattening would be optimal, she suggested either munching on lunch meat or a glass of milk. I tried the milk thing and it really worked! I would drink it at the same time each day bewteen meals and the hunger was gone! Good luck!
