protein shakes
Hi, I'm 2 months post op and I can tell you right now that I cant stand the protien shakes that my nutritionist has required me to drink, I've gone thro several samples annd even bought 5 containers full that I WONT use cause it doesnt taste right, I'd rather drink watered down chalk. I know I NEED the extra protien and my nutritionist is adament about this particular brand. Does anyone know out there another protien shake or bar that can be bought at a local store without ordering over the phone or internet. please help with this information. Thanks a Bunch!
Hi Monica!!
As long as your nutritionist isn't insisting on that particular brand due to health issues and/or limitations, I can share my favorite protein drink with you..... it's the only one that I like, and believe me - I have tried them ALL!!!
AdvantEdge Carb Control (ready to drink) Shake - Cocolate Fudge
11 fl. oz
100 Calories
3 fat grams
4 Carbs
0 Sugars
15 Proteins
*Also available in Vanilla and Strawberry
Haven't tried it, but you could probably add a little protein powder into it for a few extra grams - don't know how that would taste, but if you have all that extra powder laying around, it might be worth a shot!
Cheapest at Wal-Mart at about $4.99/four-pack.
Check it out - you might like it!!!
Hope this works for you!!!
Hugs!
Kristi
This isn't a protien shake.. but it is Hot Chocolate.. it is by Health Wise Distributed by Nutritional Resources, Inc. Augusta GA 30906. It is VERY good!! I can only find it at my doctor's office though. It has 80 calories and 15g of protien and 2g of sugar and 3g of Carbohydrates in an 8oz cup of hot chocolate.
It is wonderful! Check with your doctor and see if they can tell you where to find it. It isn't chalky at all. Taste just like Swiss Miss.
I know you are looking to actually just buy it at a store - but if you do find it - give it a try.
Good luck!

Hey Monica,
I have recently started taste testing the Isopure ready to drink protein drinks. They are available at GNC. The come in fruity flavors and kind of taste like a Red Bull or similar energy drink. They are low calorie, no sugar, no carbs, and according to the employee at GNC they contain the highest quality and easiest to absorb protein available. They are quite spendy, but I am very picky about taste. I also like the Muscle Milk in chocolate milk flavor, banana cream flavor, and my newest VERY FAVORITE Mocha Joe flavor. These are also available at GNC, but theya re also quite spendy and these have a higher calorie and carb count. My surgeon recommends them to his patients now though. So, I know they are "approved". I heard that GNC has an excellent return policy, so you will have to ask about that when you buy. I know I hate wasting, but I won't drink something that is just disgusting either. Good luck finding something that works for you.
Angela
I know you just want a store but may I suggest www.bariatriceating.com . You can order samples, try them and then find what you like in the store. You can also call and speak to them they are very knowledgeable. Some people do Unjury because it is flavorless and they add it to their Crystal light. I am told that Muscle Max stores have a very good selection. I personally love IDS Cappaccino and Belgium Chocolate. Matrix by Syntrax is also very good.
The higher the quality of protein the better it taste. Also you want to get Whey protein as we absorb it the best. Last your taste will also change over time. The ones I started with are just for back-up now. Protein is a life long requirement so find what you can like and do it. It does help if you use a blender to mix it. I love my bullet, it is worth every penny.
Good luck,
Robin
Monica,
I, too, like the Unjury and Isopure but found the Isopure had a weird aftertaste but good in those early days. Personally, being 2 years out, I like to add a little of fruit and splenda to mine.
Try the Necter brand. I really like the Strawberry (add strawberries or bananas) or the Fuzzy Navel (add peaches and/or pineapple). I also do a little vanilla with blueberry. Cru**** up with some ice in a blender and...yummmm
But, be careful, you're still early and this may be too much for you yet. Check with your doc on when you can add fruit to your diet before trying these combos...they are still good without the fruit...just a little ice in the blender works well too
Good Luck
My surgeon is not a fan of protein powder. The weight loss doctor and nutritionist are.
Try "generic" what you have on hand protein powders in place of the brand names in some of these, I am thinking you should find one or more you can enjoy, not just tolerate. Also you can add up to 4 scoops of protein powder to sugar free Jello pudding to up your protein, just make it with the 2 cups of milk as directed and you have protein pudding.

My favorite one (if you can eat fruit) is the following:
You may want to half the recipe...

Crush 3 ice cubes in blender
add 6 oz water or fat free milk
add 4 frozen strawberries (no sugar added or syrup)
add 2 tablespoons of reduced fat cream cheese
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
add a serving of any vanilla protein drink.
You can substitute other fruit such as raspberries, banana, etc. I also love to set it in the freezer for awhile and get it not quite frozen, but with ice crystals in it. It's not the same as a cheesecake- but it has that flavor.
Protein Delight Chocolate Coconut
I just have to tell ya'll how good this flavor is. It tastes just like an almond joy. I mix it with water, a splash of Carb Countdown Milk and ice. Use my magic bullet and blend. It even has pieces of coconut and chocolate in it. It is really great. It is hard to believe it is a protein shake.---------- I bet that would make some killer protein balls!---------- I know!!! It's my new favorite; I have to have it at least once a day. I call it my Almond Joy Shake. It makes me feel like I'm splurging on a special treat. Oh, I also add a splash of S/F DaVinci Coconut syrup. Makes it extra coconut-ty..... YUMMY!!!!!!--------- I got a sample pack of all the protein delight flavors at www.enjoyhealth.com but Susan Maria's site has the 1.1 pound tubs for 3.00 less at 16.75---------.Have you tried the white chocolate strawberry one yet? I want to order it cause it sounds so yummy but wanted to hear from a fellow chocolate coconut lover how it compares in taste. Also, I think they make a lemon flavored one; it's not sold at bariatriceating.com I saw it on another site but was thinking that sounded pretty yummy too.
I start off with Atkins shakes and then couldn't stomach them any longer...so now I'm using an Unflavored protein mixed w/crystal light or SF decaf French Vanilla Coffee which is great...I also like the Matrix 5.0 it's like hot choco...and I have Protein Delite Strawberry & white cho****an't say it's a WOW protein but it's passable) I do like the Protein Delite Pineapple Vanilla that one is great, just mix with milk or pineapple koolaid...
I would get an unflavored protein and that way you can mix it with anything you want.
fuzzy navel from nectar ...and now i'm in love. It's really smooth, not gritty at all. when you mix it up it looks like sunrise crystal light...and very palatable. I drank it alone without flavoring it as I wanted to see what it tasted like. very good I would say. I am buying some today and I plan to mix it with sunrise crystal light. If you go to Susan Maria's website, she is out of stock on the canisters, but she has them in the to go pack which gives you 21 single serve portions. That is what I want to get so that I can take my protien with me like I do my crystal light. Hope this helps you. Good luck on the protien search.
I really like several of the drinks from Protein Delight, Alpine Milk Chocolate, Strawberry White chocolate, Vanilla Very Berry. I have also tried and liked their Raspberry Yougart and Chocolate Coconut. They have 19.5 grams of protein per serving. You can get these at Susan Maria's site bariatriceating.com. From GNC I also like the low carb Ultramet in Chocolate Fudge. It takes really good mixed with water and a couple of teaspoons of cool whip and ice. The best thing about this shake is that it has 35 grams of protein per serving and it comes individually packaged so you can take it anywhere. It also mixes well in a shaker cup as does the protein delight. If you don't have a Magic Bullet I suggest getting one. They are great.
I tried alot of different samples and the best one for me has been profect by protica www.protica.com it is only 2.7 oz so easy to drink and tastes some what like Kool-Aid. You can order a sample through them . and Matrix 5.o chocolate is really good too it is either hot or cold but you are back to 8oz and this early out it takes so long to drink and you feel so full!
Shari
I agree with you about the unjury strawberry, but their chocolate is very good. I drank several canisters of it pre and post op and then went to chocolate matrix 5.0 and then the protein delite chocolate coconut....hmmm chocolate...do you see a pattern here?
I remember reading that someone said they "couldn't drink a chocolate shake every day for the rest of their life" and I thought....I can!
good luck. Try ordering a bunch of samples and pick your favorite.
The absolute best protein smoothies in the world are RTD Xtreme smoothies available through Bariatriceating.com. They are smooth and taste SOOOOOOO good! There are 5 flavors. I would suggest getting the 5 pack to try the different flavors. My favorites are Praline Scream and Cappuchino Xtreme - yummy! And each can has 35 grams of protein! I don't know how I would have gotten this far without them. And my surgeon told me that people who use protein shakes or smoothies for breakfast (when I have mine), lose more weight and keep it off than people who just eat normal breakfast food. Try them - they are AWESOME!
use Pro Blend 55. One scoop with lowfat or skim milk give ya 35.5 grams of protein and it isn't too expensive either......it runs $24.99 for a 2 lb can. I mix it with Hood's chocolate carb countdown milk and it is very good. My favorite flavors of the protein is Mocha Cappachino and the Chocolate fudge. It isn't real thick and it is very smooth and good. I have recommended it to lots of others here and they like it too. I buy mine at the Vitamin Shoppe. GNC carries it but it is almost $10 more there. Some of the other websites that sell protein powders are very expensive. Sylvester Stalone has a protein pudding called Instone pudding. It has 20 grams of protein for 6 oz. It comes in Choc, Vanilla, Lemon and banana cream. It is very good and doesn't taste bad at all. You can also get it at the Vitamin shoppe. It is $6.99 for 4 puddings. Good luck as you prepare for your surgery.
Syntrax called Nectar Roadside lemonade it really does taste like the lemonade you by from a stand
I started adding protein powder to my Jello SF pudding. It tastes very good and is cheaper. You can find Instone Pudding at Drugstore.com on sale for under $3.00 a 4 pack. I did enjoy the banana creme and chocolate pre-op.
NOW SPORTS unflavored whey protein and mixing it with Crystal light which is pretty good because you can choose the flavor you what without having to buy a whole container of it
I just now started trying other protein mixes...I like the Matrix 5.0 hot choco...thats really good when it's cold..
Protein Delite Pineapple Vanilla -I like this with Hood countdown milk or just pineapple Kool-Aid
Protein Delite Strawberry & white choco-I've only tried it once with the Hood carb countdown milk and it wasn't bad but not my 1st choice.
You will have to keep trying different proteins until you find the one that you like best. My main staple for protein is the unflavored one...

Good Canned Protein Shake?
EAS Advantage Edge
They are 100 calories, and very low carb with no sugar. They have 15 grams of protein and 11 oz. They come in chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, caramel and other flavors. They are in a shelf stable container-not a can.
EAS Advant Edge in the silver 4 pack - about $4.97 at Wal-Mart. They're not thick, no after taste and the chocolate tastes somewhat like a Yoo Hoo.
Susan Maria at www.bariatriceating.com!!
I had to try the protein powders people have been raving about from Susan's site and received my first order today. I tried a protein drink at lunch and it was absolutely delicious! I mixed cold skim milk with her sample packet of Protein Delite's Strawberry White Chocolate protein powder (19.5 grams of protein, not including the milk!). It tasted like a thin strawberry milkshake with real pieces of strawberry! So good!!!
I really love the raspberry yogurt one, mixed with skim milk and frozen strawberries. I wiz it up in the bullet and it is delish.
If you order directly from Scitec, they will send you samples, give you 15% off retail prices and there is free shipping over a certain amount.

I called the company and they sent me a free sample of the Strawberry White Chocolate and Cantaloupe.
I'm so very in love with Scitech's products. Hopefully you got a sample of the pineapple vanilla... SO good!
Protein Smoothie
After undergoing gastric bypass surgery, the need existed for increasing protein in my diet. This is what I came up with for breakfast. The amount of protein depends upon the protein powder you use. After trial and expensive error, the protein powder I found I liked best is Unjury brand, available at www.unjury.com

2-3 strawberries, hulled and cut in half
1 scoop protein powder or chocolate protein powder or strawberry protein powder
2 tablespoons Splenda sugar substitute
1 cup nonfat milk
3/4-1 1/2 cup ice
1 servings
Place banana, strawberries, protein powder, and Splenda in a blender.
Blend until smooth.
Add ice and blend until ice is incorporated and mixture is thick.
