Eat Protein when Hungry

The most basic key to learn in recovery is to eat protein when we feel hungry. We may feel hungry (head hunger) for all sorts of foods, but, usually our bodies want protein when we feel hungry. I try to have several types of protein available throughout the day. I may have powder mixes or AchievOne for breakfast. I like eggs but my nutritionist doesn't want me having to many--I don't know whay since my cholestorol has always been within normal ranges. I'll have regular food for lunch and dinner. And, I usually have protein bars in the evening or at night. Jerky would work well or any leftover meat or protein. I do get in my fluids and my complex carbs to a lesser extent. However, I do want to stress the urgency of satisfying hunger with protein. Eating high carb white flours or sugars only makes the problem worse. We've learned the wrong way to eat for years. It may take some of us longer than the time given for the"magic bubble" to learn how to eat properly. Don't give up.

Absolutely great advice!!! I have found that I have gotten away from protein supplements (i.e.shakes, powders, etc) the further post-op I was.... turns out I need to go back and reapply some of those basic principles to help me get away from the carb issues!! Thanks for your imput!!!! Hugs! Kristi

I am in total agreement too. I have to get back to the basics ASAP!! I find myself reaching for junk when I think I am hungry, thus making things tremendously worse as mentioned. Protein is the key for me, and I need to remember that!! I have gained a few pounds and I really want to stop that train before it gets out of control. Thanks for the note!

Thanks for sharing. I am glad to see someone else that isn't a big breakfast "eater" and likes to have something after dinner as well. I have tried to eat breakfast, but I end up making poor choices or trying to choke down something I don't like. I am going to start drinking a protein shake for breakfast and eating solid foods at lunch and dinner. When you eat your protein bars, do you treat them as a meal or do you drink water with them? I find that protein bars make me super thirsty. Still, I might try having another shake or protein drink as my bedtime snack. Thanks again. Angela

Let me give you a great recipe with egg whites that helps those cravings and still a good protein source: Egg Crapes 2 egg whites 1 tsp splenda 1/2 tsp vanilla blend together and place in skillet sprayed with Pam...cook like a pancake, flipping when done on each side While the eggs are cooking, chop up 1/2 cup of your favorite fruit (strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, etc) and sprinkle 1 tsp splenda over cut-up fruit. Place fruit mixture in microwave for 2 minutes, until pureed. Place fruit mixure in middle of cooked egg "pancake" and roll-up....fabulous!! Great breakfast option

Really a good advice. Its absolutely right, if you feel hungry dont avoid your appetite. At that time you need to eat nutritious food. You can eat cereals that contains proteins. I have a good and a simple recipe of cereals. That is sprouted salad. Take any cereal and put it in water for awhole night. Now boil it for 15 minutes. Put it in a bowl add chopped onion, tomatoes, coriender leaves, salt and black pepper in it. Add half lemon to. Try this its really good.
