Back in the saddle again...again
Finally, 12 weeks after breaking my arm and 9 weeks after surgery to plate/screw it back together, I got on a horse again yesterday.
I was just this side of terrified (not sure which side this side is...) Even though this is far from my first broken bone from riding, getting back on this time was much harder. Riding again after my RNY wasn't anywhere near this scary, even though I was off for a similar length of time. Maybe I'm just getting old.
Oakie, a very nice old school horse, was very kind to me, as was my very patient trainer. Within 20 minutes we were trotting circles and working on walk/trot/halt transitions. Good school horses are absolutely worth their weight in gold. Even though I was almost rigid in fear when I started, he stayed relaxed and did his job. He is quite fluent in English, expecially when the trainer uses the words "walk" or "halt", so all I had to do was put the leg on to get the trot and remember to sit back for those downward transitions.
It's going to take some time (and a lot of time in 2-point and without stirrups) to get my leg back, but at least I'm past the hardest part. I have a new mare to try as soon as I'm riding well enough to concentrate on her and not what I'm doing. She showed well this past weekend, and was very calm in the midst of chaos, so I'm really looking forward to it. She's a beautiful, delicate looking thoroughbred, and we're hoping that she's the right one to replace my big, spooky, and too powerful (for me) warmblood.
It feels good to be back.
