What impact has living on both sides of the issue (obese/fat versus healthy/thinner) had on who you are as a person?

Obese/fat I was a recluse. Thin(ner) and health(ier) I am out more and more open to meeting people.

I'm sure everyone will agree that having been MO, we're now more compassionate and less likely to discriminate against the obese; perhaps we're more sympathetic to many other groups, as well. There are many other changes, as well. I'm not sure what you're looking for here, but I've got a very different view on life in general since changing my lifestyle. I am more likeable (so I'm told), less defensive, more outgoing, less angry. I love my new life!

It has made me more compassionate and tolerant towards both MO people and naturally thin people. I can understand someone when they complain that they need to lose weight and are only 10-15lbs overweight and I can understand how isolating being MO is.

I have always been compassionate with people who are struggling. I think this just makes me want to tell people, it doesn't have to be this way. I never knew how much I was missing until I lost weight and found my life. Now, it hurts me to see someone struggle just to walk like I used to. I want to cry with them every step. Also, I find when you lose weight, you cannot sit still. I have so much energy that I have to get up and moving almost every commerical of a tv show. I wonder how I sat for hours in front of that thing without moving.

I find that I am more outgoing now, and I am being more open about my surgery, who knows maybe some day, someone will pursue it because of me, but I like to think that I have always been a compassionate person, and pretty non judgemental about size. Vivienne

I think that being obese my entire life has made me far more tolerant of people who are outside of society's ideal or norm, particularly because I was picked on mercilessly as a child and would never want to make anyone else feel the way I did. I guess I tend to side with the underdog. Losing weight hasn't changed that about me; I think it's a fundamental part of my personality.
