Monday again... Just 10 more days left in this challenge round! Today's question: How do you suppose we can explain the "change in tastes" that so many of us undergo after WLS? How does someone who loves a specific food that is not a bad food--eggs for example, suddenly lose the taste for them? Or someone (like me!) who hates, hates, HATES eggs suddenly begins eating them EVERY day for a month! LOL How is this possible? What do you think changes in our body to allow this to happen? Lea

That's a really good question. I know that I love pasta, but because it doesn't settle well with me, I've just learned to live without it. I think that as we go along and realize that there are some foods that we just have to live without or some foods that we know that we just need to eat because they're good for us and settle well, we just all adjust. It'll be interesting to see what others have to say about this. Michele

Well I know for myself the foods I use to like (pasta, pizza, etc) don't set with me so I would rather not feel the dumping symptons and choose give up eating that food. But one of the weird things for me is that I use to like tomatoes and now I just can't stand the taste of them and they can't touch any of my food or I can't eat that food. To me they taste dirty and I really have no idea on why that is...they don't make me sick they just don't taste good. Not much helkp with this question...sorry. Michelle

That's a very good question! One I don't have the answer to, but I would love to know the answer to it! I rarely (if ever) ate any seafood before surgery but I am having a love affair with fish, shrimp and salmon. I can't explain it. I don't know why things I loved before don't look remotely appetizing to me now. I am anxious to read everyone's thoughts and ideas as to why our tastes change because it's a total mystery to me!

I know that I'm so over food for it got me into the OR to begin with. I used to have a love of cooking... now you can't get me into the kitchen unless it's a special occasion. Some foods hurt... I don't like how the food feels when it hits my small intestines... I prefer to drink my food. Some of this is physical, some is psychological I'm aware. I just "want out" of being the fat person who felt so trapped and helpless for so long. Kim

I am only 1 month out so Im not sure that I have had this happen yet. I gave up soda about 2 months before surgery and chocolate about 1 month before except my daughters birthday cake, and have no desire at all for them. But I havent had a craving for something that I never used to eat, (not yet anyway!!!!!) Viv

This is such a great question for which I have no answer..I can say that after surgery a few weeks ago I wanted nothing more than to be able to eat tuna fish..I craved it...looked so forward to it...was finally able to have it on Saturday and threw it up. Now, I don't want to look at a can of tuna..no idea..but looking forward to others replies..Laura

I thought about this one for awhile - and realized that many years ago, when I was pregnant with my daughter, I got sick every time I even SMELLED chicken... and I love chicken... so maybe it's a hormonal thing? Obviously, our bodies and our minds have some sort of disconnect function sometimes! Interesting to see peoples' responses!

I think right after surgery is has something to do with many of us being in ketosis. . one of those inevitable side effects of a high protein, low carb diet. I know that plain water still doesn't taste good to me most of the time. I think as we learn what works for us and what doesn't, we tend to stay with those foods. At least I do. .
