I think any exercise works but what you need to do is continue to increase the duration/weight/intensity as you get fitter. Otherwise, you reach a fitness plateau (just like in the eating phase of weight loss) and begin to maintain.
I still hate abs: crunches, standing abs, pilates, doesn't matter....HATE! HATE! HATE!!!!

This is my weakness.. I walk and sometimes more. so I can not say.. I need a kick in the butt!!!
