OK so this post is about marriage and legal aspects of being a lesbian,, If I can ask anyone it would be the people here,,, I have a few questions,, Does anyone know if its legal anywhere in the united states to get married ? I think they had changed it and I don't think it is anymore but am hoping?? Also I know you can go to canda but once you cross the border it doesn't apply here does it?? I heard that a unity like chruch will "unify" yall as life partners,, does anyone know anything about this?? Me and liz are trying to plan our wedding now and even if we can't offically get married here , we are going to have unity bless us as life partners and have a reception and all,, I can't wait!!!!! I want a winter wedding , which in New Orleans/ Baton Rouge area thats pretty much impossible!!! I was thinking in Feb.. but don't think it will still be cold here then,, but I know during Nov and Dec everyone is sooo busy with holidays,,, what month do yall think is ok/better?? I don't know exactly where it is and is not legal but I do know that regardless of where you go or what you do you should have your proper paperwork incase something terrible happens because unfortunately our partners are not entitled to the same things that a straight couple would be go to http://www.rainbowlaw.com/ to see what they have for you. I don' t work for them, I have just used them in the past for me and my partner take care, good luck and congrats - Jeremy

Queer lawyer here. Gay marriage is only legal in Massachusetts. But, the Massachusetts Supreme Court recently held that the marriage law only applies to residents of the state. In other words, the county clerks in Massachusetts cannot issue a marriage license unless one, or both, are residents of Massachusetts. Or, if the parties sign an affidavit that they will become state residents within a specific period of time. If residency is not established within that time, the marriage becomes void. Vermont has civil unions. I'm not sure if they allow that for non-residents. Some states do allow gays to execute domestic partner agreements. Those agreements are basically super-powers of attorney. Florida is one of those states. I believe California is, as well. Not sure of other states. The general rule is State A must honor all marriages of other states, unless those marriages are against the sound public policy of State A. That is why so many states have adopted constitutional amendments saying gay marriage is illegal in their states and that they violate the sound public policy of their state. That way, they do not have to recognize gay marriages from Massachusetts. My opinion is this issue will eventually end up in the US Supreme Court and the issue will be whether these state constitutions violate the Equal Protection Clause of the US Constitution. Yes, state constitutions can violate the US Constitution. Tbere are quite a few religions that will hold commitment or religious marriage ceremoines for gays and lesbians. I believe the church you were referring to was the Unitarian Universalist Church. Metropolitan Community Church does them too. If you are Jewish, Reform Judaism rabbis can perform religious marriages for gays and lesbians in the synagogue. Thankfully, I'm Jewish, so, if Daniel and I every decide to do that, I will have a place to do it. Good luck.
