Why am I worried?
Hi Friends,
Ok, here is a really crazy thing. I am really worried that I have not gotten sick. I know this sounds loopy, but so far I have been able to tolerate everything I have eaten or drank. I am still on pureed foods, but have had potatoes, won ton soup, cottage cheese, meat, and even chicken. All pureed of course. I have had occasion to feel really full and some slight problems with my bowels, but nothing major so far. This worries me because I don't want to be one of those people who can eat whatever she wants. I want to get sick if I eat something with sugar or too much fat. It will keep me honest. Also, even though I am only almost 2 weeks post-op, I am eating about 5 oz. of food now instead of 4. I am getting my walks in as the dr. ordered, but probably not enough water. Should I be worried??? How did it go for the rest of you? Thanks!
Rosa
I remember feeling the same way early on. But recently read something that said only about 20% of bypass patients ever show intolerance toward sugar or high fat foods resulting in dumping.
And I've learned that you can't count on the "dumping" to keep you honest. Just honor the rules your nutritionist and doctor set for you. If you start playing the eating games, you'll only "discover" something you wish you hadn't. And then you really have to deal with why you're eating--not that you shouldn't, but I'd recommend that for a couple months out, not a couple weeks.
And drink your water!!!
I to worried about that. I do not get sick. I am 5 months out and the only time I have gotten sick is when I have eaten too much or tried something my body said no to, but my mind said yes to. I don't have the dumping syndrome with sugar. Which worried me, but then I realized that this is not a magic bullet, it is a tool. One part of the tool is not useful for me but size control is very useful. The part of feeling full when I eat the right amount of something is a very useful tool.
Also I do not let others know that I am not sensitive to sugar. I work with a bunch of nurses so we talked about this before my surgery and I just let them think I am. So they do not expect me to eat sugary snacks and we have improved the quality of what people bring in and if I don't partake people understand why. It is good for others around me too.
Keep to what the nutritionist has said, enjoy not throwing up, and keep losing weight. I have several friends who have had immense problems with throwing up and have not lost more than I have. In fact because of it one was severly limited in her ability to exercise and is losing very slowly.
Do get tha****er in!
Hi Rosa--
I think that everyone goes through this. I have only thrown up once...and it was nothing to do with this surgery...just good 'ol flu vomit!!! (blech)
Just count yourself lucky...my partner throws up a lot...but she blames me for it!! (she loves my cooking so she is always eating way too fast) Although, she had a VERY tichy stomach prior to surgery, so it just followed her after surgery.
You are doing great from your description of your intake. I have adopted the tell no one about the toleration of sugar policy also. I never take in more than 7g in any serving of anything...and this works out well for me. My cousin has been having sugar from nearly the second month and can tolerate 35g in a serving...no way will I get there.
Take care and just be happy everything you eat isn't revisiting you!!! heehee

Rosa,
I would say consider yourself very lucky to have not been sick. I think the first time it happened to me was because I ate something way to fast. It was my first taste of food since surgery.
I would also say that getting in your fluids are really important. And should be done everyday. (not that I get all mine in every day, just thought I should say that to you. lmao)
I have a tough time with chicken. But have found other meats to be ok. I cannot in any way do fried foods. (yes, I cheated and tried it at work, wrong I got really sick)
Not everything is going to effect you in ways it will me. Or me in ways it will anyone else.
I think you are doing awesome for only two weeks out. Keep up what you are doing chica.

Rosa--
I promise you are not only in your feelings. Isn't it weird how all of us are different as individuals but we can still think the same?
Everything that I eat goes down fine, and it scared the **** out of me when I first was post op because I wasnt expecting to be blessed with no complications like others experienced. For months, I felt like I was an alien and that I was never going to lose weight because I have not dumped once to since my surgery. I havent cheated with sugar, but I do make sure that I watch how much sugar I take in each meal.
Also, I wouldn't worry to much about not getting in all your water, you are fresh out of surgery and it will be soooo hard at first, but I promise each day will get easier. Just relax, and be happy that you dont have any complications and that you are able to keep your food down with no trouble; that is a blessing.
You will do wonderful! You are such a sweet lady and you have a lot to offer the world so dont give yourself such a hard time!!!!!

Thanks everybody for your responses. I guess I don't need to check into the looney bin yet. I have decided to cut my portions down a couple of ozs. since after my support group today, everyone seemed to think I was eating a little too much. I have been having diarrehea (sp?) quite a bit, and they think that is probably my way of dumping. I am also going to try to drink a lot more water because they also said the diarrehea may be caused by dehydration. Protein, protein, protein....driving me crazy. Way too much to cram in everyday. I'm so sick of protein, I could scream! But do not fear, my friends, I will keep taking them. I really do appreciate each and everyone of you and your taking time to respond.
Big Hugs,
Rosa
