A question for the educators and everyone else
I am wondering how you handled your wls at work. I am a new teacher, only in my second year. I am at a new school this year so I am not very close with any of the other teachers yet. I am worried how I will handle my wls at work. I hope to have it over the summer, but I am sure I will get all the questions when I get back to work in Aug. I don't know whether to tell some of the other teachers before, or just wait until after. And what do I say. And what if the kids ask me questions (elementary art teacher). What do I say to them? This is my biggest concern at the moment. I am a fairly shy person and I was just wondering how some of you handled it. Those kids are so truthfull sometimes
Sierra,
I work at a high school so I didn't hear too much from the students (at first). Now that I'm down over 100lbs I have had several of them tell me I look good but never question how I lost the weight.
As for co-workers it was all over the school last May before my surgery. I told a few close friends, knowing they'd tell a few close friends and so on and so on (you know how gossip spreads in a school). They all knew I had health issues so no one really questioned why I was having surgery. The only people who have been at all negative are my fellow fattie friends. They of course have had issues because I'm getting thinner and they are still fat. To be quite honesty only one of them has been a really ignorant.
We are into our Junior meeting season, where parents come in so we can discuss their Junior childs college search process. I had a parent come in who hasn't seen me since last June at graduation. She was blown away by my weight loss. She complemented me but didn't ask how I did it. If she had I would have told her. I bet she already knows since this is such a tiny school district and I live in the district. They all know I'm gay so I'm sure most know I had WLS. Our high school also has a local cable television station and I had to film a spot for our junior meetings so the community has seen the new "thinner" me so I'm sure rumors will be flying.
Anyway good luck with your surgery and with dealing with the honest elementary students. It is really funny how many of us on the GLBT board are gay educators.

Thanks for the response. It is good to hear someone elses story. I know that the kids are going to ask me, they ask me personal questions every day. (are you married?, how old are you?, do you live by yourself?, do you have any pets? Whats that scar from? Who is that ring from? etc etc etc. And they are sometimes painfully honest. The other day I was walking by the kindergarten room and a little boy whispered really loud "look how fat that woman is" and pointed to me.
Well I guess I will find the answers as the questions arrive and see how I feel at the moment.
