Question for Saturday
For the post-ops
When you had the surgery, how did the hospital staff treat your partner if you have one and/or your GLBT friends. Could they have done a better job and did you say anything?
For the pre-ops?
Are you worried about how your partner and/or GLBT friends will be treated when you have surgery? And have you talked to your surgeon about it?
My answer:
I had my surgery at Temple Community Hospital in LA and they were wonderful to Sherry. She was totally treated as my spouse. They brought her a rollaway bed and fed her (hospital food, but it was the idea that counted) 3 times a day. No homophobia problems. And we made it clear that she was to make any and all medical decisions that I was not able to make. Fortunately everything went well. I felt that it was all exactly as it should be.
Hope to hear from some of you with your experiences.
Good question
When my partner had her surgery and UCDavis med. center in Sacramento Ca the staff was so nice to me especially her day nurse because she was also a lesbian so that helps. The night nurse seemed kind of rude at first but when she read Misty's chart and found out I was her partner her mood changed. She let me stay and sleep there brought me a bed showed me how to take care of Misty and even came in quite a few times when it was slow and just sat and chatted. I don't know if it had to do with the fact that we were lesbians but it was funny how her mood changed so quick.
Jen
I had my surgery at Modesto Memoria in Modestol and everyone was totally cool, my partner, Jen, was with me from pre-op room then was there when I was brought to my room. They even gave me a private room. Jen took care of my the most all nursing had to do was take my vitals and give my my meds. from A.M. shift to P.M shift everyone was great. My nurses would stop to just chat since I was such an easy patient! I think some was, they were not phased by us being a same sex couple and some was professional courtesy, I am in the medical field too, so I feel their pain of having a difficult patient! But, I would definatly have medical treatment at that hospital again!
