Psych Evaluation
Hi everyone,
I've just scheduled my psychological evaluation for early May and I'm a bit nervous. My doctor won't do surgeries on anyone who has a "major psychological disorder." I have Obsessive-Compulsive disorder to a mild degree- I spend about an hour each day, spread out through the day, on internal counting and tapping things three times, plus a little obsessive anxiety that I've learned to work around. I've learned to cope pretty well. In other words, a little kooky, but not that scary. I've had this my whole life, and it's always been some little variation on counting and touching. In other words, I don't think I'm going to develop a 9-hour-a-day handwashing compulsion overnight. Does anyone else have to deal with a related disorder, this or a major anxiety or something, and have gotten approval to go ahead? I just don't see how this should affect my candidacy for surgery, but I'm nervous anyway.

Dear Jenn,
Congrats on taking the first steps. I have been on anti-depressants long-term and had no problem with the psych piece. I think the thing they are looking for is why you want the surgery and if you will self sabotage. Internal counting should not be a hindrance to you having the surgery. Good luck and keep your chin up! Let us know how it goes! Anna
