I'm on the losing side

Hey everyone. I haven't posted in a while. As surgery approached I found myself hanging around OH less instead of more. I had surgery on October 8th, 2 days earlier than planned. I came off the pain meds on the first night, they were making me sick.
I find myself already mourning the loss of food. It isn't a bad thing, nor is it unexpected, I just had hoped to get further out before missing food. Seeing the scale drop already is unbelievable though. Two days of liquids preop and two days post op, I'm down 12 lbs. That is amazing.
my sleep schedule is all over the place since being in the hospital but other than that, I could not have hoped for a smoother experience and recovery.

Glad to hear that you are doing well after surgery. This will be tough in the beginning especially with the food loss, but it does get easier. My sleep was way off after surgery and I had the worst back pain ever and could not get comfortable for awhile. I had to stay on my pain meds for a couple weeks. The food loss was hard for me, but I am so glad that it has passed now. I am not going to lie and say that it went away overnight, but really after you are on liquids and soft food stage for awhile (I was for over a month) you tend to forget about the bad food and just focus on what you need and it seems to get better. You will probably find that you will look at food in a whole new way. I now see a plate of carbs and fat when I look at a piece of pizza or anything similar where it is pretty much all carbs, fat, or sugar. I don't really even see that it looks good anymore. I am sounding like a food junkie (well I was, haha) but now I see what needs to be eaten to keep yourself going and not to eat what makes you feel necessarily happy. You will also find that you will be dropping pounds like crazy in the first couple months (all the liquid and soft foods). This is what kept me motivated to start hiking and working out after surgery. You are going to do great and hang in there, the beginning is the roughest time.
Take Care,

I wondered where you had gone!  Well, now I know! It does get better...I don't care about food anymore.  Don't crave specific foods, and buy the kind of foods that go down well, and are easy to digest.  I make sure that I have my proteins, fruits and veg, and leave the carbs and other old trigger foods on the shelf.  I wanted this to happen, and it did.
So, hang on to your hat, because you're in for an exciting ride! Wheeeee.....

Thank you all for your responses. I have waited a long time for this and so far, it has proven to be worth every minute of that wait . Also, thank you for reminding me that the various issues and emotions are part and parcel to such a dramatic life change. It is all SO exciting right now though, the good and the bad, it's thrilling to be at the trailhead of such an adventure with so much potential to bring wonderful things to my life.

more to come on some of my post op ideas about food. The relationship is changing quickly and in ways I didn't expect.

Also from TN and had surgery this month, glad everything is coming along for you. The affair with food gets easier to walk away from now that we've made this change.

I'm less and less interested in food. I will hit my year 10/21 and I have lost 107 lbs. Totally worth it--even the complications!

What you are feeling is completely natural.  POsting and talking about it helps (and oddly enough - alot of people become addicted to the Food Network during this period).  There are a lot of great tools for dealing with these emotions that you can get at group.  Dr Livenoods and Dr. Ihrigs groups.  The other groups are great to attend just to be with people going through what you are.
