Surgeons
A few days ago I wrote on the DS board about my experience with the nutritionist (who was entirely unprepared and had no knowledge of the DS whatsoever) *****fused to approve me for surgery because she thinks I should be twice my weight and she "never" approves people for surgery.
As a result of that post, the conversation shifted to my surgeon and why I wasn't working with the nutritionist in office. As best as I know, there isn't one... but more importantly, if there is, s/he is likely to just go with whatever the doctor says, instead of giving a professional and independent opinion. I'd much more prefer the latter. The more people I encounter en route, the less likely it is that this will be an experience I come to regret.
When they (the DSers) learned of my surgeon (Dr. Eric Schlesinger) I was told in no absence of terms, to run like hell. It's a rather ironic command, particularly given that it is his job to ensure that I will be able to someday run like hell. The group expressed a genuine concern, which I sincerely appreciate.
As it turns out, there has been a particularly alarming amount of litigation involving Dr. Schlesinger in Illinios - particularly with regard to tort (civil wrong) actions. Each of the case files, which I reviewed, reflected (I believe) that the case was dismissed and that there were no awards or settlements. I'm not an attorney, though my first degree is in paralegal studies... so I understand a decent amount.
I also searched the Arizona Medical Licensure Board, and it reveals that there are no complaints against Dr. Schlesinger. It seems that, in light of the absence of a finding of wrongdoing and in the absence of actions taken against his licensure since practicing in Arizona - particularly given his experience and the learning curve for the DS, it is unlikely I'm going to experience anything serious or negative as a result of him performing the operation.
One individual posted about Dr. S. leaving a patient with a 20cm common chanel (the portion of the intestine where the food is actually absorved) though, there were no links, so it's really only an anecdotal report. I am a little nervous about it... but with the interactions I'm having with all of these other practitioners, I anticipate that at some point if there has been a markedly negative experience it would have come before one of them, and they would bring that to my attention....
People seem to either absolutely love or absolutely hate him. Have you guys experienced a similar dichotomous view with regard to your surgeons?
