This forum is WAY too slow. We definately need to do something about this...ok, so I'll start!

Who here is pre op and who is post op? What surgery did you/are you going to have?

What made you decide on WLS?

I had RNY 2 1/2 years ago.

In the fall of '08 my doc told me that I was going to die before my parents and that woke me up! I had been thinking about WLS for sometime so I finally decided to take the plunge.

Then in April of '09, my doc said I needed to lose 40lbs before he would do the surgery as I was 390lbs, and as a teacher I wanted it done in the summer. So in the next 3 months I lost 50lbs and in August of '09 I had my surgery.

I still have yet to reach goal weight, but I am incredibly happy about all the weight that I've lost so far. I lead a totally different and wonderful life now, and still believe that WLS was one of the BEST decisions I've ever made.

I had surgery 12/08 to reduce my BMI enough to get on the kidney transplant list. I had always been overweight but the treatment (steroids) for renal failure had added another 100 pounds. I started at 378.
6 months after surgery I qualified for the transplant list.
Jan 17th of this year I got a kidney.
I also got more than that from Rny..I going to be able to raise my son and continue my happy life.

I had the Lap-Band in March of '08 and had it removed in April '11 because of complications.  I now have the VSG and I am loving it.

I decided on WLS because I developed diabetes and had to go on insulin. I had too many weight related issues that came up as I was approaching my 40s and decided to get it done.

I will be having gastric bypass surgery this coming Monday the 19th.

I decided to have surgery because I was tired of being tired and not being able to move and do everyday activities. I was also borderline diabetic for almost a yr and was affraid that I would become diabetic soon if something wasn't done about my weight.
I have been heavy since I was 8yrs old.  It's been a long hard road. I am 46yrs old.
I have arthritis like my mother but not as bad yet.  As she has gotten older she has had more health problems (heart, lung, arthritis).
Her arthritis has caused her intense pain which at times has incopasitated (sp?)  her, which has caused her more weight gain to the point where her heath problems are now life threatening.

What made me decide on WLS?
I did not want to become like my mother when I get older.  She is only 19yrs older than I am, so in my mind 20yrs from now I could be where she is health wise, in pain all the time from her arthritis and dependant on others to do some things for her.  I do not want to go there especially when there is a way I can detour that outcome.  I know it is not the "easy way out" as some people would say. I know it will be hard work on my part to facilitate a healthy life style and maintain that for the rest of my life.

It's time I do something for me.

I am post-op - 9/08.  I had a gastric bypass, lost more than I weigh currently.  I am holding steady within 10lbs of my lowest weight.  I had plastic surgery a year ago - not sure I would do that again though . . .

I had WLsurgery because I wanted to be a part of life not an observer.  I wanted to try new things, hike, ride horses, travel without anxiety . . . Also, I had a horrible sweating problem that was terribly stressful to me.  It took a long time for that to resolve but finally did when my weight got low enough.

I am very happy with my decision.  I don't often feel deprived and have not had any complications other than immediately post-operatively.

4 yrs post-op.  I had RNY Feb. 2008.  Glad I still dump as it keeps me on track most days!  lol
Wanted to lose the weight fast and knew that my insurance would cover it!
No regrets  :)

Welcome to the board and good luck to you!

I had a lap band placed 8/07  did well with it and lost 120lbs....then I had problems. I had aspiration pneumonia after a fill...and then again 6 months later after it was refilled.... I gained back 75lbs in no time ........SO I am having a VSG on April 6Th.

I was 320 lbs. I had yo yo'd weight my entire life. I have bipolar disorder which effected this cycle more than going on diets. I would lose and then gain back +15. I am a child psych nurse. I was finding my weight was effecting my work. I was done being overweight.....I did not want to keep gaining and losing. It was also effecting my mental health.
